Area Sports Briefs: Catawba announces Hall of Fame class

Five new members will be inducted into the Catawba College Sports Hall of Fame in ceremonies that will take place in Goodman Gym on the evening of Friday, Nov. 10.
The Class of 2017 includes Mike Delabar (Class of 2002), Adrian Whitley Gantt (1998), Bill Griffin (1971), Danyel Locklear Jolicoeur (2004) and Luke Samples (2005).
Delabar played men’s soccer and men’s lacrosse for Catawba.
As an all-region soccer player, he helped Catawba to a South Atlantic Conference title as a freshman and to a league tournament title in 2001 when he was named SAC Tournament MVP.
He was All-Deep South in men’s lacrosse twice.

Gantt was a two-sport athlete at Catawba, competing in field hockey and softball.
She was twice an All-American in field hockey and was a two-time All-SAC selection in softball.
In field hockey, Gantt scored a pair of goals and handed out nine assists.
Gantt started in center field in softball and rapped out 109 career hits with 67 runs scored. Her 38 career stolen bases still ranks fourth all-time.
Gantt is married to Jim Gantt, Catawba’s current head baseball coach and a Class of 2015 Catawba Sports Hall of Famer.

Griffin starred in football and track and field for Catawba.
He was a two-way lineman in football. Griffin was drafted in the seventh round in 1971 by the Dallas Cowboys and also had a stint with the Miami Dolphins in 1972.
Griffin twice earned all-conference honors as a defensive lineman and was an All-NAIA District 26 performer.
In track and field, Griffin earned all-conference and All-District 26 honors four times in the shot put and discus.

Jolicoeur was a standout in women’s basketball, helping Catawba to three conference titles and a pair of league tournament titles.
Catawba qualified for the Division II Tournament three times during Jolicoeur’s career. Among her school records are most points in a game (41) and a career (1,838).
In 2004, Jolicoeur was named SAC Player of the Year and also claimed tournament MVP honors that season en route to honorable mention All-America honors from the WBCA.
She was a three-time first team All-SAC pick. Jolicoeur shot a career-record 57.4 percent from the field, ranked third with 985 rebounds, second with 134 blocks and fifth with 214 steals.
Jolicouer played professionally in Belgium.
In 2012, she was named Robeson County Coach of the Year, coaching girls basketball at Purnell Swett High.

Samples quarterbacked Catawba to the Division II football semifinals in 2001.
He was first team All-SAC three times and was SAC Offensive Player of the Year in 2003.
Catawba won two SAC titles and earned three playoff berths during his four years.
Samples threw for a school-record 9,650 yards in his career and also holds the career marks for completions (744) and touchdowns (74). In a 2003 contest at Carson-Newman, he set the school record with 392 yards passing and 38 completions.

Livingstone football
Livingstone’s football team arrived on campus Sunday and Monday, according to head coach Daryl Williams.
The Blue Bears’ first time on the field was scheduled for 8:15 this morning.
Livingstone opens the season on Sept. 2, against Benedict, in Columbia for the Capital City Classic.
Livingstone football season tickets for the four home games are on sale for $80 with a parking pass and $60 without a parking pass.

Catawba track & field
Catawba head track coach Jason Bryan announced the hiring of assistant coac Max Coleman.
Coleman, a 2014 High Point Universty grad, comes to Catawba from Transylvania University. He’ll coach sprints, hurdles and jumps.

In the Trusted Choice Big “I” National Championship at Annandale Golf Club in Madison, Miss., Michael Childress played 15 holes in the first round before weather halted play.
Childress was 5-over when play was suspended.
Blake Tomlinson of Salt Lake City fired a 69 to lead the boys division.
Play resumes today in the 72-hole event.
Minor leagues
Will Albertson (Catawba) had two hits and two RBIs in Augusta’s 6-2 SAL win against the Rome Braves on Monday.

The Kannapolis Intimidators managed only five hits in a 6-1 loss to Greenville on Monday at Intimidators Stadium. Grant Massey drove in the Kannapolis run in the seventh.

The Intimidators are asking fans to bring school supplies to the ballpark as part of the team’s annual Back To School Night school supplies drive on Saturday, Aug. 12.
