Craig Brooks (Catawba)  has gotten saves in his last four outings for the Tennessee Smokies in the Double-A Southern League.

The Chicago Cubs prospect is having a great year and has struck out 70 in 49 2/3 innings.

Brooks dominated in 12 outings at Myrtle Beach before being promoted to  the Smokies. For the season, he has a 1.81 ERA and eight saves.

Jerry Sands (Catawba) belted two homers for Richmond in a doubleheader on Sunday and raised his batting average to .280.

Bryan Blanton (Catawba) notched his fourth save on Monday for the Gulf Coast League Yankees and has a 1.08 ERA.

Blanton hasn’t walked a batter in 10 relief outings.

Blake Hickman struck out eight batters in the first five innings, but the Greenville Drive rallied to beat the Kannapolis Intimidators, 5-3, on Tuesday.

A.L. Brown is in a 9 a.m. scrimmage today at Monroe. West Rowan is in a 6 p.m. scrimmage at Hough tonight.

Legion baseball

Randolph County Post 45 will play Thursday night against New Jersey in Shelby at 8:15 p.m. in the first round of the World Series.

Also in Randolph’s “Stars”  pool are Arkansas and Idaho.

Little League softball

Rowan Little League plays its first pool game in the World Series in Portland, Oregon, late game tonight at 11 p.m. Eastern time against Cedar City, Utah.

Local golf

Fifty-two GARS members played a Captains Choice at Corbin Hills.

The first-place team with a minus-14 was Ray Pope, Larry Petrea and Gerald Barker.

The team of Donald Martin, Gary Schenk, and Ken Miller was second at minus-13.

In third place with a minus-12 was the team of Red McClain, Franklin Ford, O.J. Chandler and J.C. Ritchie. They won a scorecard playoff with the team of  Winsten Mahaffey, Clive Mahaffey and Bobby Clark.

Tony Labarbera, Bert Bollinger  and Bob Sidden won low handicap round in a scorecard playoff over the team of Martin, Schenk and Miller.

Closest to the pin on the No. 2  hole was Scott Hay.

Longest putt on No. 9 was made by Clark.

In the rain-plagued Big I Championship in Mississippi, Salisbury’s Michael Childress finished the first round with an 80.
