Defending champions Mallory McDaniel and Richard Cobb and medalists John Kyger and Johnny Kyger advanced with victories in the opening round of the annual Labor Day Four-Ball Memorial Golf Tournament Saturday at the Country Club of Salisbury on Saturday.
McDaniel and Cobb, who have won the championship twice in the past three years, turned back Derrick Lipe and Andrew Morgan by 3 and 2.
McDaniel and Cobb turned in a 5-under-par round in the win.
The Kyger father-son team also used a sub-par score to advance with a 2 and 1 win over Jackson Griffin and Gerald Staton.
McDaniel and Cobb will face Dusty Holder and Ryan Honeycutt in the second round today. The medalists meet Jim Hubbard and John DeRhodes in the second round.
Action was halted for about 40 minutes by a storm. Teams which were unable to finish their matches will do so this morning at 8 a.m.
The second round will follow, and the final round will be played on Monday.

Catawba’s Melissa Powers had a school-record 37 kills in a five-set loss to Pfeiffer.
Powers had her 37 kills on 75 swings with just six errors. Melissa Griffith added 10 kills and 20 digs.
Catawba was also swept by Midwestern State. Powers recorded 13 kills and had five blocks.
n Women’s soccer
Andrea Dunshie had a goal and an assist to spark Catawba’s women to a 2-1 win at Queens on Friday night. Lena Suarez also scored for Catawba.
n Men’s soccer
Catawba lost to St. Andrews 2-0 in its first match on Friday.
n Morrison transfers
North Iredell’s top girls basketball player Santana Morrison has enrolled at Winston-Salem Prep.
