CHINA GROVE — The annual Remembrance of 9/11 day will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Price of Freedom Museum, located near the intersection of Weaver and Patterson roads.

The opening ceremony begins at 10 a.m., led by volunteer museum curator Joel Honeycutt. Bagpipes, played by Drew Barkley of the Kannapolis Fire Department, will lead the memorial tribute.

The Salisbury Fire Department will display a fire engine, the department Humvee and a trailer holding a steel girder from the World Trade Center.

Deputies with the Rowan County Sheriff’s Department and Sheriff Kevin Auten will attend, as well as Salisbury police representatives, State Highway Patrol troopers and their vehicles.

Numerous county fire departments will also be represented.

The observance continues until 3 p.m. with Memories of Yesteryears, a display of fire, police, rescue and emergency equipment — old and new — as well as restored farm equipment and vehicles. The three-room “house” displaying the way of life in the 1940s is now open.

The Smoke House will be open, and a fire safety program for children is planned.

Jeff McCorkle and the Strings of Victory will perform (see accompanying story). Visitors can see the progress made in the restoration of the museum — formerly the Patterson School — and the many new exhibit rooms now open.

The Millbridge Ruritans will begin selling food at 11 a.m.

The Price of Freedom Museum is an American war memorial dedicated to the men and women of the armed services who paid the ultimate price of freedom with their lives and service to the country.
