Ashley Collins snagged the biggest amberjack, a 45-pounder, during a fishing expedition off Ocean Isle with Travis Ketchie, Matt Hiatt and Lindsay Barringer.
Ketchie said they released the amberjack, which was only about 5 pounds away from citation size. Collins fought it for about 35 minutes before getting it in.
The group from Rockwell was fishing from the boat “Aftershock” about 35 miles off the coast. They were using pogeys (menhaden) for bait that they caught by net.
Barringer also pulled in a big amberjack of her own, one that weighed about 35 pounds. The group also caught a couple cobias.
Ketchie said he was on the way to Nags Head for another fishing adventure, this time in search of white marlin.

Joey Waddell, 11, caught a 35-inch king mackeral and a 28-incher on a summer fishing excursion out of Little River, S.C.
His father (Rob), grandfather (Robert) and brother (Jake) were also along for the trip that ventured 24 miles off the coast.

Rusty Smith and his son, Mc-Gwire, had a successful fishing trip while vacationing at Sunset Beach this summer.
One of the biggest catches was a 6-pound flounder pulled in from the dock of their beach house.
The 8-year-old also caught a nice trout using live shrimp at Tubbs Inlet and also pulled in a 4-pound drum while fishing from a boat at the Little River jettys.
