Salisbury got its soccer season off to a rousing start by defeating county rival West Rowan 5-1 at Ludwig Stadium on Monday night.
The Hornets took a 2-1 lead into halftime. Jesus Olvera scored on an assist from Randy Almeida, while Michael Mazur scored off an assist from Olvera.
For Mazur, a freshman, it was his first varsity goal.
The first goal of the second half was set up by Will Mason, who sent a pass to Mazur. He fed Miles Jordan for the score.
Olvera scored again off an assist from Justin Presnell and Paul Collie finished the offensive assault with an unassisted goal.
West scored on a penalty kick but Salisbury goalkeeper Frankie Cardelle was outstanding, according to coach Tom Sexton.
“Frankie had a tremendous night,” Sexton said.
“Our fitness held up for us,” he continued. “West gave us all we could handle for 50 minutes. They have dangerous players. They’re real good. They’re fun to watch.”
Salisbury doesn’t play again until next Monday when the Hornets play host to East Lincoln at 7 p.m.
– Catawba volleyball
Catawba’s volleyball team was picked second behind Wingate in the SAC preseason poll released on Monday.
Catawba seniors Melissa Powers and Melissa Griffith were named to the preseason All-SAC first team.
– Intimidators fall
The Kannapolis Intimidators lost 3-2 at Hickory on Monday to end a six-game winning streak.

– Stricklin second
Taylor Stricklin (West Rowan) made a pass on the 16th lap and took second in Saturday’s street stock division race at Hickory Motor Speedway.
– RAC swimmers
Eight Rowan Aquatic Club swimmers are on the North Carolina Top 10 List for top 10 times in the state in an event in their age group.
RAC is coached by Matt Hall at J.F. Hurley Family YMCA.

– Legion baseball
Sumter, S.C., won twice in Shelby on Monday, claimed the Southeast Regional American Legion Baseball Tournament championship and advanced to the Legion World Series, which also will be held in Shelby.
Sumter eliminated North Carolina and Area III champion Randolph County Post 45 with a 6-1 victory. Tyler Christman pitched a complete game, while Matthew Price and Michael Blackmon hit homers.
Shelby Post 82 made two errors in the bottom of the ninth and lost the championship game to Sumter 4-3.
– McCanless Couples
The McCanless Couples played on Sunday with 25 golfers participating. The format was Texas Scramble.
Monica Green and Charlie Gillispie finished first with a 33.
John Rowland and Monica Green shot 34 for second. Matt and Liz Murphy shot 35 and finished third in a scorecard playoff with Kevin and Debby Little.
Ron Blythe won the closest to the pin on No. 3.
– NWC golfer signs
Northwest Cabarrus golfer Chadd Marburger has signed with Pfeiffer.
Marburger was Junior Club Champion at the Club at Irish Creek, All-NPC and a two-time MVP for the Trojans. He averaged 74.2 his senior year.
Marburger received a Pfeiffer’s Presidential Scholarship as well as an athletic scholarship.
– GARS golf
Dick Hatoway shot his age ó 75 ó to feature a GARS event at Lexington Country Club on Monday. Hatoway won the ‘A’ flight with a net of 63.34.
Low ‘B’ player was Tony LaBarbera with a net of 61.00. Jeff Williams won “C’ flight with a net of 63.89. Low ‘D’ player was Bobby Bryant with a net of 70.15.
– Junior Mac golf
In the latest Junior Mac Golf Tournament at McCanless, Bryson Sprinkle shot 42 for nine holes to win the 9-under division, Nick Lyerly shot 46 for second.
In the 10-13 division, Justin Allen shot 47 for first place. Darin Basso shot 49 and finished second.
– Knox sports
Knox sports physicals will be held Wednesday from 3-5 p.m.
The cost is $10.
Knox football practice will be held this week from 4-6 p.m.
Tennis and softball practice begin Aug. 25 from 3:30- 5:30 p.m.
