A pair of first-round picks squared off at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium, but the highest-profile person in the park watched from the stands.
Augusta starter Madison Bumgarner, whom the San Francisco Giants selected 10th overall in 2007, shut down the Kannapolis Intimidators in the GreenJackets’ 4-2 victory Thursday night.
Chicago White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen was in attendance to watch his son, Oney, play second base for the Intimidators. Their lineup also featured Gordon Beckham, the eighth overall pick in the 2008 draft.
Beckham, who went 0-for-4, hit a slow roller to third and struck out twice in three at-bats against Bumgarner (14-3). Kannapolis trailed 4-0 until Mark Fleisher hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning.
Bumgarner, a South Caldwell High alum, allowed six hits and no runs in 6 1/3 innings. He had 10 strikeouts, no walks and reached 97 mph on the stadium’s radar gun.
Guillen was able to attend because the White Sox had the day off ó Chicago continues its homestand tonight against Tampa Bay. He sat on the front row near Augusta’s dugout, signed autographs for young children and posed for pictures when approached by fans. He politely declined a midgame interview request.Oney Guillen, batting ninth in the order, went 1-for-3.
– Minor Leagues
New Orleans pitcher Bobby Parnell (East Rowan) took the defeat in the Zephyrs’ 16-8 loss to Albuquerque.
Parnell, making his third Triple-A start for the New York Mets affiliate, fell to 1-2. He allowed seven hits and six runs (five earned) in 2 1/3 innings. He had one strikeout and two walks.
* Brett Bartles (A.L. Brown) had a big game for Billings in its 12-9, seven-inning Pioneer League loss to Casper.
Bartles hit his first homer of the season, a two-run shot, and doubled twice. He went 3-for-4 and scored three runs.
– Prep tennis
Salisbury’s girls tennis team won 9-0 against South Rowan on Thursday.
Hannah Lebowitz, Kirstin Meyerhoeffer, Brooke Johnson,Shea Comadoll, Joy Loeblein and Erika Nelson won singles matches for the Hornets (2-0). The doubles victories came from the tandems of Loeblein-Nelson, Mary Margaret Mills-Mally Fisher and Sarah Shirley-Sierra Davis.
Salisbury plays host to defending 3A champion Charlotte Catholic this afternoon.
– Prep soccer
Valentin Nava and Carlos Soto had three goals apiece in Carson’s 8-0 win against North Rowan on Wednesday.
Matt Corriher and Anthony Melton (penalty kick) also scored, and Anel Ramic recorded the second shutout in school history. Corriher, Melton, Salih Begic, Dylan Overcash and C.J. Sippel led the defense.
* Nava scored both goals for Carson in its 2-2 tie with Alexander Central on Monday.
* East Rowan’s Will Mancil and John Owen scored goals in a 6-2 NPC loss against West Iredell. Mancil scored on a penalty kick, while Owen scored from 25 yards out.
Mancil and Andrew May had strong 80-minute efforts.
* South Rowan tied A.L. Brown 1-1 in a non-conference game. Lito Rivera scored South’s first goal of the season.
* South lost to Northwest Cabarrus by an unreported score in an NPC match.
* South defeated North Rowan 4-1 on Thursday.
Rivera, Paul Curiel, Taylor Patterson and Caleb O’Neal scored as South rallied from an early 1-0 deficit.
Patterson scored from 50 yards out, while O’Neal connected on a header. Keeper Josh Cox recorded a total of 19 saves in the three matches to help South (1-1-1) get off to a good start.
* West Rowan lost 8-0 in its NPC opener to North Iredell.
– Prep volleyball
West Rowan swept Salisbury in a non-league match and lost 3-0 to North Iredell in the NPC.
* East Rowan lost 3-0 in its NPC opener to West Iredell.
– Jayvee football
Davie County’s jayvee football team downed Salisbury 34-27 at Ludwig Stadium. Carson Herndon’s third TD pass of the night to Jarrett Wallace proved decisive.
Salisbury fumbled inside the red zone as it drove for a tying score late in the fourth quarter.
The game began with a bang as Denzel Redmon ran back the opening kickoff for Davie, and Dominique Dismuke responded by taking the ensuing kickoff 85 yards for a Salisbury score.
Riley Gallagher ran 42 yards for a Salisbury TD, David Simons kicked two PATs and Dejoun Jones broke tackles on a 52-yard dash on the final play of the first half for a 20-20 tie at the break.
DeShaun Lyles went 36 yards for Salisbury’s only touchdown of the second half.
Redmon rushed for 231 yards to lead the War Eagles.
– Local golfers
Elliot Gealy (Salisbury) shot 65-74 ó 139 in the first two rounds of the Tarheel Tour Firethorne Open held in Marvin. Gealy, who was tied for the lead after the first round, is in a tie for eighth, six shots back.
* A number of local golfers participated in the Dogwood State Junior Championship tournament held in Gastonia.Roy Dixon shot 77-75-73 ó 225 for 12th place in the boys division and was third in the 14-15 age group. Alex Nianouris shot 75-84-77 ó 236 for 29th and was eighth in the 14-15 age group.
Allison Lee was 12th in the girls division. She shot 78-82-96 ó 256.
Davis Richards, a sixth-grader, shot 43-40-39 ó 122 for 27 holes and placed sixth in the 11-under boys division.
– Softball clinic
A middle school fast-pitch softball clinic will be held at Catawba on Saturday. The clinic includes instruction on hitting, fielding and pitching with drills and games.
Cost of the clinic is $25 per player. It will be conducted at Catawba’s Whitley Field run from 9 a.m.-3 p.m.

– Youth baseball
The China Grove Youth Baseball League will offer girls softball and fall baseball for the first time. Softball will be open to girls ages 6-13, and baseball is for 6-12, although 12-year-olds cannot pitch. Registration forms can be picked up at Dale’s Sporting Goods.
