Salisbury Elks announce most valuable student contest

The Elks National Foundation awards $2.44 million in college scholarships each year to a total of 500 high school seniors nationwide through its Most Valuable Student contest. Salisbury Elks Lodge #699 also awards $1,000 scholarships to local students.

To be eligible students must be a high school senior and a U.S. citizen. The judging criteria includes scholarship, leadership and financial need.

Salisbury Elks raises money for local scholarships through their annual Don Stout Memorial Golf Tournament, which will be held on Saturday, Sept. 30 at Corbin Hills Golf Course at 11 a.m.  Contact Robert Sce for more information at 704-798-8813 contact him via email at bsce13@yahoo.com.

2017 N.C. Special Olympics fall tournament to be held in Charlotte area

Special Olympics North Carolina will come to the Charlotte area for the 2017 Special Olympics North Carolina Fall Tournament to be held Nov. 3 through 5, according to SONC President/CEO Keith L. Fishburne.

The 2017 SONC Fall Tournament will showcase the talents of more than 1,000 athletes competing in basketball, bocce, golf, roller skating, soccer and tennis.  Competition will take place at the following Charlotte area locations: Basketball at Butler High School, Crestdale Middle School, Carolina Courts and Mint Hill Middle School; bocce at Crooked Creek Park; gold at Charles T. Myers Golf Course; roller skating at Kate’s Skating in Indian Trail; soccer at Colonel Francis Beatty  and tennis at Charlotte Indoor Tennis Club. Opening Ceremonies at Bojangles’ Coliseum will kick off the event on Friday, November 3.  All events of the SONC Fall Tournament are free and open to the public.
An estimated 1,000 volunteers are needed throughout the weekend for positions that range from setting up tents and keeping score, to line judging and presenting medals. All volunteers must be at least 14-years-old and can register online now at www.sonc.net. Interested groups of eight or more individuals should contact Kathy Langfield at volunteers@sonc.net for more information.
Assistance is also needed in providing more than 8,000 meals for athletes, coaches and volunteers throughout the weekend. If you’re able to assist with meal donations, please contact Kelly Vaughn at kvaughn@sonc.net.

Rockwell High School reunion
The Rockwell High School class of 1954 recently held a reunion at Wink’s Restaurant. James Puckett, class president, welcomed the group of 12 graduates, and remembered those who had passed away that year.
The deceased included: Willie Johnson, Amy Swink Via, Janet Frye Rhodes, Jerry Fry and Louise Goodman Fry.
The 12 class members who were able to attend the reunion were: Shirley Jacobs Heffner, Ruth Trexler Ritchie, Naomi File Carrick, Hazeline Poole Davis, Mary Catherine Stoner Arey, Viola Eudy Dodd, Larry Vanhoy, Ken Shue, Clyde Arey, Lee Basinger, James Puckett and Wayne Bost.
