Salisbury man among four sentenced federally in 2016 firearms theft

GREENSBORO — A Salisbury man is among four who were sentenced this week in federal court after pleading guilty to charges they stole firearms from a firearms dealer.
Anthony Derek Steele, 25, was sentenced Tuesday to 10 years in prison followed by three years of supervised release, and he was ordered to pay in excess of $15,000 in restitution.
He pleaded guilty May 11 to the theft of the firearms, according to a statement from acting U.S. Attorney Sandra J. Hairston.
Steele’s co-defendants — Shemar Marquise Anderson, 21; Jalen Caldwell Hairston (no relation to the attorney), 20; and Marcus Davonta McIntosh, 22, all of Lexington — pleaded guilty to the theft. Anderson and Hairston were also sentenced Tuesday. McIntosh is scheduled to be sentenced Nov. 2 in Greensboro.
U.S. Department of Justice officials say that on Dec. 7, 2016, law enforcement officers responded to Mimi’s Mini Mart on N.C. 8 in Lexington after receiving a report that it had been burglarized during the early morning hours. Upon questioning the owner and reviewing surveillance video from the store, investigators determined that two suspects entered the store at 3:49 a.m. and stole 18 firearms after breaking a glass display case.
Further investigation lea to the arrests of Steele and three others in the burglary.
The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Terry Meinecke.
