Goals by Alex Kalogeromitros, Landon Ketchie and Will Peeler lifted East Rowan to a 3-2 win against Carson on Wednesday.

The North Piedmont Conference win for East was its first in two years.

Ketchie, Peeler, and James Lomax had assists. David Burleyson had 13 saves in goal.

South Iredell scored a late goal to beat West Rowan, 1-0, in NPC soccer on Wednesday.

Prep cross country

A.L. Brown’s Brandon Hernandez ran  a PR 15:43 in the Hare & Hound Invitational at McAlpine. Hernandez finished third.

The Rowan County  Championships will be held today at Dan Nicholas Park, with the varsity boys race at 4:45 p.m. and the girls race at 5:30 p.m.

Prep volleyball

In Tuesday’s North Piedmont Conference win at South Iredell. Lindsay Elmore had 14 kills and Mallory Weast had 13 kills for Carson.

Grace Thomas had 31 assists. Kary Hales had 18 digs. Sophie Andrews had three blocks.

Leah Mesimer had 18 assists as East Rowan swept Central Cabarrus in a non-conference match on Wednesday.

Olivia Wright had 10 kills and four blocks. Leah Wright had 11 kills and 11 assists. Baleigh Hill had 15 digs. Megan Beam added five kills.

Prep girls tennis

Carson lost at South Iredell, 5-4, on Tuesday in a North Piedmont Conference match that lasted until about 10 p.m.

Emily Sloop, Gabi Jolly,  Siera Fesperman and Maci Cooper won in singles for the Cougars.

The teams are now tied for first place at 6-1.

Prep girls golf

Grace Howell, Camryn Corriher and Carmen Fraley shot 46s for East Rowan’s girls to finish first in a North Piedmont Conference match at McCanless.

Sophia Brown shot 48 for Carson and led the Cougars to second place.

Maddie Owens’ 63 led West Rowan.

Gillian Brown shot 46 for Statesville.

Jayvee football

A.L. Brown won 33-20 against Carson on Wednesday as the teams made up a postponement.

Michael Gonsalves had two 4-yard scoring runs for Carson. Andrew Beaver kicked two PATs.

Alex London’s 28-yard scoring pass to Jake Harris put Carson in a 14-all tie at halftime, but the Wonders took control in the second half.

Mid. school tennis

Salisbury Academy  defeated South Davie, 6-3.

Winning in singles for Salisbury Academy were Margaret Thurman, Morgan Jeter, Sydney Hlavacek, Millie Wymbs and Lucy Barr.  Ellison Frick/Wymbs won at No. 1 doubles.

Knox defeated Salisbury Academy on Wednesday, 5-4. Singles winners for Knox were Sophie Chmiel, Abby Campion  and Mary Morgan. Doubles winners were Chmiel/Campion and Sage Huffman/Mary Morgan.

Knox was defeated by West Rowan on Tuesday, 5-4.

Winners for Knox in singles were  Campion,  Morgan and Jaleiah Gibson. The team of  Chmiel/ Campion won in doubles.

  Erwin won against Mooresville, 7-2, at  Granite Civic Park Courts on Tuesday.

Singles winners for the Eagles were Riley Isley, Lauren Whisnant, Joanna Thompson and Summer Null. In doubles, Isley/Audrey Ward, Whisnant/Rebecca Reilly and Thompson/Null were winners.

             

7th grade football

Peter Williams-Simpson scored three touchdowns in the first half on runs of 16, 59  and 68 yards for West Rowan (2-1) in a 36-14 win against Southeast. Dylan Upright scored on a 53-yard scoring run and  added three 2-point conversions. In the second half, Athan Gill scored on a 66-yard run.

The offensive line of Charles Withers, Asriel Mauney, Adam Coughenour, Joshua Wilson, Quentin Lofton, Andrew Newton, Abe Davis and Dalton Miller blocked well for West.

The West defense was led by Damaron Phillips, Canyon Turner, Jared Richardson, Makaii Blackwell and Lee Vaughters. Blackwell and Coughenour recovered fumbles.

West travels to Erwin next Tuesday.

Gabe Pozyck scored on a pair of 4-yard runs and Nathan Chrismon broke a 50-yard scoring run as China Grove beat North Rowan, 22-0.

Jacob Ritchie and Daniel Cuevas  kicked PATs.

Defensive standouts for the Red Devils were Chrismon, Ritchie, Keison Tillman, Brandon Haas, JD James and Colton Fisher.

Seventy GARS members played in foursomes at Rolling Hills.

Low ‘A’ Flight player was Gary Schenk with a net of 60.50.

Low ‘B’ Flight player was Ernest Wagner with a net of 61.43.

Low ‘C’ Flight player was Windsor Eagle with a net of 61.90.

Low ‘D’ Flight player was Larry Luther with a net of 66.19.

Low gross score was Bernard Caldwell with a 66. He had an eagle on the par-4 No 16 hole.

Pfeiffer athletics

Pfeiffer men’s basketball team announced its 2017-18 schedule.

The Falcons will be changing conferences and divisions as they begin a new tradition in the USA South Athletic Conference and NCAA Division III.

Terrence Baxter, a Catawba women’s basketball assistant coach since 2013, was inducted into the Pfeiffer Sports Hall of Fame.

Baxter starred as a point guard for the Falcons.

Parker Chavis (South Rowan) shot 73 and 76 for Pfeiffer in the King Invitational. The Falcons finished ninth.

Hunter Dillard’s two-day total of 144 led the Falcons.

Showcase baseball

The South Charlotte Panthers will play a doubleheader in Greensboro on Oct. 8 at the Grasshoppers Stadium.

Hayden Setzer (East Rowan) has been a big fall addition to the Panthers.

He  recently was named the team’s “Player of the Week.” Setzer went 4-for-8 at the plate with a double, a homer and three RBIs. He also got a win on the mound, striking out nine and allowing one hit in four scoreless innings.

College football

Catawba quarterback Reid Carlton is out for the season with an injury.

The Indians expect Carlton to be granted a medical redshirt, as he played in only two contests this season, St. Augustine’s and VMI.

With Carlton out of action, the depth behind starting QB Patrick O’Brien is now former East Rowan star Samuel Wyrick and true freshman Ken Avent III, whom the Indians still hope to redshirt.

College soccer

Catawba (5-2) posted a 5-0 win over USC Aiken on Wednesday afternoon at the Frock Soccer Complex.

A goal by Becky Frost in the 10th minute put the Indians ahead to stay.

  Catawba opened its men’s tennis season with a 7-2 win at Pfeiffer on Wednesday afternoon.

MLB

ST. LOUIS  — The last time the Cubs went to the postseason three straight years was in 1906-08. The World Series champions won the National Central for the second straight year with a 5-1 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday night.

Under .500 and trailing Milwaukee in the division race at the All-Star break, the Cubs turned things around with a stellar second half.

Addison Russell hit a three-run homer and John Lackey pitched six strong innings for Chicago.

The Cubs are the first defending World Series champion to win their division the next season since the 2009 Philadelphia Phillies and the first defending champion to reach the playoffs the next season since the Cardinals won the wild card in 2012.

Twins

CLEVELAND  — The Minnesota Twins became the first team to make the playoffs after losing at least 100 games the previous season, clinching an AL wild-card berth on Wednesday night when the Los Angeles Angles lost 6-4 in 10 innings at Chicago.

The Twins couldn’t secure their first spot in the postseason by themselves, losing 4-2 to the Indians, but that hardly mattered.

They got hot in August and haven’t looked back in becoming the 13th team — and first since the 2009 Seattle Mariners — to go from 100-plus losses to a winning record the following season.
