Steven Williams ran for two touchdowns, Robert Massey-Brice scored on a fumble recovery, and Livingstone gave Lamonte Massie his first win in 15 games as head coach with a 27-10 victory at Lincoln (Pa.) on Saturday.
The Blue Bears (1-4, 1-1 CIAA) capitalized on five Lincoln turnovers and had their best rushing game of the Massie era to defeat a Lincoln program playing its first season of football since 1960.
Senior Rashaad Flucker didn’t score a touchdown but rushed 25 times for a career-high 150 yards for the Blue Bears, who led 14-3 after the first quarter.
Livingstone came into the game with 137 rushing yards in its first four games, averaging 1.3 yards per carry. On Saturday, however, it ran for 184 yards and averaged 4.6 yards per rush.
The Blue Bears scored less than two minutes into the game, when Williams scored on a 7-yard run. Williams then connected with freshman wide receiver Kerry Hammock on a 24-yard touchdown pass later in the quarter to give Livingstone a 14-3 advantage.
The teams traded touchdowns in the second quarter, and the Blue Bears led 20-10 at halftime. They scored their only second-half points when Massey-Brice, who finished with nine tackles, two of them for loss, recovered a fumble in the end zone for a touchdown.
The Livingstone defense finished with 12 tackles for loss and four quarterback hurries and also broke up five passes. On top of that, freshman defensive back Devonta Harmon intercepted two passes and John Ford II intercepted one. Lincoln quarterbacks Kareem Dennis and Aaron Thomas combined to go 16-of-34 for 199 yards.
Livingstone will look to turn its victory into a winning streak when it plays at rival Johnson C. Smith next week.
