The Salisbury  team of Maria Capito/Julia Honeycutt won the Central Carolina Conference Tournament doubles championship on Wednesday in Lexington.

Capito and Honeycutt won 6-0, 6-0 in their first three matches and won 6-0, 6-2 against  Salisbury teammates, Emma Nianouris/Lillian Rusher in the tournament final.

Nianouris and Rusher won on a third-set tiebreaker against a Ledford duo to reach the final

Salisbury also did well in singles, with Meredith Burton finishing as tournament runner-up. Burton won three matches before losing to North Davidson’s Khali Maxfield-Davis 6-1, 6-0 in the final.

Salisbury’s Bethanie Stauffer ran into Maxfield-Davis in the semifinals and lost 6-0, 6-0. Stauffer finished fourth.

The CCC qualified six singles players and six doubles teams for the 2A Midwest Regional that will be hosted by Salisbury.

The North Piedmont Conference only gets three regional qualifiers in singles and three doubles teams.

West Rowan’s Payton Holt, the conference champ, qualified in singles, while Carson’s Emily Sloop/Siera Fesperman and East Rowan’s Angel Scialdone/Lauren Weisensel qualified in doubles.

South Iredell and North Iredell tied for the team championship in the tournament, with West Rowan and Carson tying for third.

The 3A Midwest Regional will be held at Concord’s Les Myers Park. Regionals are set for Oct. 20-21.

In the 2A dual team state playoffs, Salisbury will be hosting Siler City Jordan-Matthews in the first round on Oct. 18.

Prep boys soccer

South Rowan scored two first-half goals and held off West Davidson for a 2-1 Central Carolina Conference victory.

Jordi Cortez and Logan Carter scored goals for the Raiders. Cortez and  German Delgado had assists.

Parker Anderson made four saves.

Hugh Bennett scored the goal for the Green Dragons.

Salisbury won at CCC newcomer Oak Grove by a 4-1 margin to improve to 9-6-2 overall and 8-5-1 in the CCC on Wednesday.

Salisbury got goals from Luke Holland, Melvin Bonilla, and Eriq Argrett and benefited from an own goal.

Assists were credited to Angel Quintero and Bonilla.

“We started out completely flat which resulted in a nine-man substitution just eight minutes into the match,” SHS coach Matt Parrish said. “The second unit performed admirably and finished out the duration of a scoreless first half.”

Salisbury pushed the lead to 4-0 before the Grizzlies scored their goal off of Pedro Cruz, who made his high school debut in goal.

Next up for the Hornets is a series of home games. Next Monday Salisbury faces Ledford, a team they defeated in a season-changing contest on Sept. 13.

Wednesday brings East Davidson to Ludwig Stadium for Senior night.

Finally on Monday, the 22nd Salisbury hosts North Davidson. All three contests are varsity/JV doubleheaders that start at 5:30 and 7:00.

Prep girls soccer

South Rowan’s Taylor Mauldin has committed to Emory & Henry.

Mauldin a defender/midfielder scored three goals and had eight assists for South as a junior captain.

Prep volleyball

Baleigh Hill had 20 digs, Leah Wyrick had eight kills, and Leah Mesimer had 11 assists for East Rowan in Tuesday’s loss to Statesville.

Local golf

GARS members played at Warrior earlier this week.

Low’ A’ Flight player was Winsten Mahaffey with a net of 63.19.

Low ‘B’ Flight player was Lou Manning with a net of 62.34.

Low ‘C’ Flight player was Ken Miller with a net of 62.60.

Low ‘D’ Flight player was Johnny Graham with a net of 63.25.

Winsten Mahaffey had low gross with a 71.

Donald Martin, 74, shot a 74; Winsten Mahaffey, 80, shot a 71; Ken Miller, 82, shot an 81; Clive Mahaffey, 82,  shot an 82; Buddy Barger, 83, shot a 76; Manning, 83, shot a 76; and Clayton Steele, 85, shot a 79.

8th-grade football

China Grove won 34-26 against Knox on Wednesday.

Gabe Pozyck scored  on a 91-yard run and an 81- yard interception return for the Red Devils.

Nathan Chrismon scored on a 30 yard run, threw two touchdown passes, and threw for a PAT.

Ty Hubbard caught an 8-yard TD pass and Aiden Kirchbaum caught a 24-yard TD pass. Owen Blackwelder caught a pass for a PAT. Jacob Ritchie kicked a PAT.

Defensive standouts were Chrismon,  Hubbard,  Pozyck and Ritchie.

NCHSAA

Andrea Brenk, from Concord, and Jordyn Adams, from Cary Green Hope, are the performers of the week.

Brenk, a senior, helped  her team win its   third straight South Piedmont Conference  championship.

Brenk boasts a 39-0 record in conference play during her four years at Concord.

Adams, a Shrine Bowl receiver, had three punt return touchdowns against Cary.

His returns were for 45, 65 and 66 yards.

College soccer

Catawba’s men lost to Lenoir-Rhyne, 4-3, on Wednesday.

Catawba College starting off the second half with a goal by Philipp Hollenhorst scored twice for the Indians, and Jack Regan had one goal.

Catawba will travel to Anderson for a SAC match on Saturday at 5 p.m.

Catawba’s women won against Mount Olive, 3-1, on Wednesday.

Catawba (6-5) got goals from Brooke Freeman, Jenny Lux and Bailey Howell.

The Pfeiffer women’s soccer team (8-5)  recorded a 3-1 road win at Methodist (4-8) on Wednesday night.

College volleyball

Abby Lee (Salisbury) had three digs in Meredith’s sweep of Pfeiffer on Wednesday.

Parks and Rec

  Salisbury Parks and Recreation Department is currently accepting registration for its boys youth basketball league for ages 7-15.   Cost is $30 per participant.
