Area Sports Briefs: West advances in volleyball tournament

Prep volleyball

Third-seeded West Rowan won against sixth-seeded East Rowan, 25-14, 25-14 and 25-12 on Monday in the first round of the NPC tournament.

It was the last game of the season for East. The Mustangs got 15 digs from Baleigh Hill, five kills from Olivia Wright, eight kills and three digs from Leah Wyrick, two kills and nine digs from Caroline Johnson, and five assists from Leah Mesimer.

Fifth-seeded Statesville won a five-set match from fourth-seeded South Iredell and will take on top-seeded North Iredell today. West Rowan will play against No. 2 seed Carson in the other semifinal.

Seventh-seeded Salisbury lost to No. 2 West Davidson 25-19, 25-7, 25-20 in the first round of the CCC tournament on Monday.

The other winners in the CCC tournament were  top-seeded Ledford and No. 4 seed North Davidson.

Ledford and North Davidson will play at West Davidson at 5 p.m. today, with the South Rowan-West Davidson game to follow at around 7 p.m.

Carson (21-3) won twice against Hickory Ridge on Saturday, taking 3-2 and 3-1 decisions.

Mallory Weast had 32 kills. Lindsay Elmore had 24 kills. Kary Hales had 42 digs. Grace Thomas had 65 assists.   

Conference soccer

Juan Salazar sent the match to overtime with only 18 seconds left in regulation, and Tony Figueroa’s overtime goal gave Salisbury a 5-4 win against Ledford in Central Carolina Conference soccer on Monday at Ludwig Stadium.

Figueroa scored two minutes into the first overtime period.

“It was a testy match that pushed our physical and mental resolve,” SHS coach Matt Parrish said. “The  Hornets continued their upward trend by playing literally to the last second of each frame. It was a game that every minute mattered.”

Goals by Jack Fisher (on a PK) and Melvin Bonilla (after Dennis Anaya forced a Ledford mistake) gave Salisbury a 2-0 lead.

Ledford got on the board with a PK with one second left in the first half.

After Ledford leveled the match, Figueroa scored for a 3-2 Salisbury lead.

Playing a man down, Ledford took a 4-3 lead with seven minutes left, but Salazar’s late goal sent the match to overtime.

Salisbury started 0-4 but is now 9-5-1 in the CCC and has swept second-place Ledford.

Harrison Ward and Logan Carter scored goals for South Rowan in a 3-2 CCC loss to Thomasville on Monday.

Miguel Bernal had an assist.

West Rowan fell to South Iredell, 1-0, in North Piedmont Conference action on Monday.

Prep girls tennis

Salisbury is set to host Jordan-Matthews in the first round of the 2A dual team state playoffs.

That match is scheduled for 4 p.m. on Wednesday.

Carson will be hosting Eastern Guilford in a  3A first-round match.

Davie will host Lake Norman in a 4A first-round match.

The 2A Midwest Regional   will be held   at Salisbury High on Friday and Saturday. Play will begin at 1 p.m. on Friday.

Maria Capito/Julia Honeycutt and Emma Nianouris/Lillie Rusher will represent the Hornets in doubles play.

Meredith Burton and Bethanie Stauffer will play singles.

Prep cross country

The CCC cross country championships will be held today at Salisbury Community Park at 5 pm.

Prep basketball

Cox Mill star Wendell Moore has received a scholarship offer from Duke.

Prep baseball

West Rowan pitcher Olen Stamper announced a  commitment to Catawba Valley Community College.

Stamper was 4-0 last season with a 1.72 ERA and 48 strikeouts. He also batted .306 with a homer and 14 RBIs.

College golf

The UNC Greensboro men’s golf team sits in a tie for eighth place after the first two rounds of the Autotrader Collegiate hosted by Georgia State at the par-72, 6,694-yard Berkeley Hills Country Club in Duluth, Ga.

The Spartans close out the two-day, 54-hole event Monday.

Freshman Nick Lyerly (East Rowan) leads the Spartans after two rounds. He’s in 13th place with a 1-over 145. Lyerly opened with a 1-under  71   before carding a 2-over par 74.

He posted three birdies, two bogeys and 13 pars in round one before notching two birdies and 13 pars in round two.

George Mason’s Eric Edwards (Salisbury) shot 68-69 — 137 and is tied for second after two rounds of the Phoenix Invitational.

College football

The North Carolina A&T Aggies went on the road and defeated Florida A&M, 31-20, and remain undefeated and ranked No. 1 in HBCU polls by media and coaches.

The SAC players of the week are Tusculum quarterback Alex Ogle, Lenior-Rhyne defensive back Landon Scott and Tusculum punter Hunter Cantrell.

College tennis

N.C. State sophomore Alexis Galarneau and junior Michael Ogden (Salisbury) defeated South Carolina’s Wood Benton and Yancy Dennis 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (7) in the ITA Carolina Regional doubles quarterfinal Monday afternoon.

The win advanced the Wolfpack pair to the doubles semifinal, which will be played today at Cary Tennis Park.
