Marlene Spencer found this photograph among items belonging to her late husband, Dr. Allen Spencer. It shows Salisbury’s Sons of Legion Squadron No. 14, ready for its first parade on June 23, 1938. The squadron is full of many familiar Salisbury names. Allen Spencer is on the front row, third from left, and his brother Fred Spencer is the first boy at left on the middle row. Both of the Spencer boys, now deceased, became doctors. The Sons of Legion, starting with the front row left to right, are Jimmy Burch, William Weaver, Allen Spencer, Sam Plexico, James Hunt, Tommy Lingle, Pat Beard, Carl Weaver, Johnny Forbes, Skeet Coggins, Johnny Beard, Don Farshing and Bryce P. Beard, commander. Middle row; Fred Spencer, Bryce Beard Jr., Skootsy Ward, Scott Winders, Joe Lee (drum major), Richard Russell, Phillip Busby, Joe Roberts, Robert Wingate and Council Weaver.
