SALISBURY — A China Grove father was stabbed with a handcrafted sword in a fight with his son, Rowan County authorities said.

The son, Robert Kevin Eddings Jr., 31, was charged with felony assault with a deadly weapon and misdemeanor simple possession of marijuana.

The incident occurred about 10 a.m. Wednesday in the 2300 block of South U.S. 29 in China Grove. When Rowan County sheriff’s deputies arrived, they spoke with Robert Eddings Sr., 56, who told them his son had assaulted him and run into the woods.

Eddings Jr. said his father came to his home that morning playing his radio loudly and asked to borrow a pair of pliers. The son questioned his father about using drugs, which sparked an argument, authorities said. Eddings Jr. said his father picked up a nearby cinderblock used as a door stop and charged at him with it.

Eddings Jr. said he grabbed the closest item — a homemade sword that was behind an end table near a couch. He told authorities the only reason he left the home was to get away from his father, but he came back once he saw law enforcement officers.

Deputies were told the cinderblock and sword were still inside the home and tried to check the home. But the father refused to allow the deputies to search the home.

Investigators obtained a search warrant and seized 1 gram of marijuana from the home, authorities said.

Robert Eddings Sr. was not seriously injured but was checked by Rowan EMS crews and first responders from the fire department.

Eddings Jr. remains in the Rowan County Detention Center under a $2,500 secured bond.
