SALISBURY — Early voting got off to a slow start Thursday, when only 101 people cast ballots in Rowan County.

It’s a slower start than in the 2015 Salisbury City Council election. That year, about 140 people cast ballots on the first day of early voting.

On Thursday, more than 75 percent of the ballots cast in the county were in the Salisbury City Council race. The remainder were for other municipal elections.

Salisbury resident Kimberly Fleming was among the voters Thursday. Fleming said she wants to see a change on the City Council because she does not have faith in the city’s leadership. She said crime is the most important issue to her in the council race.

“It seems like every other day, there’s a shooting or a drug overdose,” Fleming said.

Early voting will continue until Nov. 3 on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Nov. 4 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Ballots for all municipal races can be cast at the Rowan County Board of Elections office, 1935 Jake Alexander Blvd. W., Suit D10. No other sites will be open during early voting.

People who wish to cast ballots but are not registered to vote can register during the early-voting period. Anyone who wants to vote on Election Day — Nov. 7 — needed to be registered by Oct. 13.

Only people who live in the municipal limits of a town or city can participate in the 2017 elections.
