ROCKWELL – The Rockwell Board of Aldermen has scheduled a public hearing on the extension of FillTech’s temporary permit for its office on N.C. 152.

The hearing is set for 7 p.m. Nov. 13 at Town Hall, 202 E. Main St.

FillTech’s permit will expire in December, before the company’s new office is expected to be completed.

At its October meeting, the board also will vote on an ordinance amendment that would remove the minimum housing code from the extraterritorial jurisdictional area.

Marlene Dunn, Rockwell town clerk, said maintaining the code in that area is costly.

“After checking the entire county, we’re the only town that actually maintains the minimum housing code in the (extraterritorial jurisdictional area) other than the city of Salisbury,” Dunn said. “It was the recommendation of John Ganus, our code enforcer, to amend that ordinance.”

The board also discussed maintenance and upgrades and plans for the holiday season.

Timothy Linker, the town’s public works director and fire chief, said missing or stolen street signs have been replaced. Damaged Christmas lighting poles have been repaired, and the board approved a bid to light the new town sign.

Solicitations for participants in this year’s Festival of Trees have been sent. Linker is seeking volunteers to assist during the festival, which should run for additional days this year.

Linker also reported on plans to repaint striping in the Rockwell Park parking lot. This has not be done in five to six years.

Jeff Jones of Salisbury-Rowan Utilities said meter change-outs in Rockwell should be completed by mid-November. Residents should be on the lookout for a blue postcard in the mail about when their meters will be changed. A number will be provided for scheduling the change-outs in the event of health needs, such as keeping dialysis machines running.

“We’ve changed about 15,000 meters so far,” said Jones. “That’s been since May.”
