The college football notebook …CHAPEL HILLó North Carolina coach Butch Davis says that quarterback T.J. Yates is receiving treatment after spraining his left ankle in the loss to Virginia Tech.
Davis said Sunday that Yates is still being evaluated, but he refused to elaborate further on the severity of the injury. The sophomore was hurt when he was taken down on a sack in the third quarter of the 20-17 loss. He played the next play, but couldn’t return afterward.
Yates had thrown for 181 yards and a score before the injury. He left Kenan Stadium briefly for X-rays, which showed no fracture. He watched much of the final quarter while sitting on a training table.
Redshirt freshman Mike Paulus replaced him and threw two interceptions.
PENN STATE
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. ó Cameras turned toward the press box when Joe Paterno moved upstairs after halftime. By the end of day, the Hall of Famer had reclaimed the lead on the career victory list for major college coaches.
Oh, and Penn State improved to 4-0, too.
It’s never dull in Happy Valley.Whether the attention is on his contract (it’s up after this season), his milestones or his health, Paterno hates it when the spotlight is on him.
“Absolutely!” he exclaimed when asked if the commotion about his move to the press box bothered him after his Nittany Lions had routed Temple, 45-3, on Saturday for Paterno’s 376th career win.
TENNESSEEKNOXVILLE, Tenn. ó Phillip Fulmer took a deep breath and with a grimace accepted responsibility for Tennessee’s second straight lopsided loss to top rival Florida.
“This one’s on me. I’m a big boy with broad shoulders. I can handle it,” said Fulmer after the Vols (1-2, 0-1 SEC) lost 30-6 to the No. 4 Gators (3-0, 1-0) on Saturday.
What remains to be seen is if Fulmer can handle another season of trying to turn his team’s season around as Vols fans question his effectiveness as a coach.
