Area briefs: Forfeit boosts Bears

From staff reportsLivingstone’s football team is now 3-0 in the league and tied with Fayetteville State for first place in the CIAA West.
The CIAA announced Sunday Bowie State has forfeited its 15-10 victory against Livingstone because of an eligibility issue.
Livingstone has won on the field against Lincoln and Johnson C. Smith the past two weeks and will be favored to climb to 4-0 at Chowan this Saturday.
– Rowan Rampage loses
The Rowan Rampage couldn’t stop the clock in the final seconds and lost 23-22 to the Carolina Eagles on Saturday in CCFL Football.
The Rampage (8-2) finished third behind the Eagles (9-1) and Greenville (9-1). The Rampage will play host to an opponent to be determined in the first round of the playoffs on Oct. 25.
Rowan trailed 14-0 when Justin Davis’ 88-yard kickoff return for a TD got the Rampage back in the game.
Rowan trailed 20-7 when quarterback D’Andre Hopper sparked a drive with passes to Will Evans and D.J. Lyles. Hopper hit Antonio Sullivan with a 17-yard TD strike and kicked the PAT to cut the deficit to 20-14.
A 47-yard field goal put the visitors from Concord ahead 23-14 at halftime.
D’Arron Cole recovered a muffed punt on the Carolina 25, and Rowan punched in a quick touchdown to open the scoring in the second half.
Hakim Pearce got the score on a 5-yard run, and Hopper ran for a two-point conversion to make it 23-22.
Hopper engineered a late drive with passes to Pearce and Bobby Lee and his own scramble to push the ball to the Eagles 19 with 14 seconds left.
The Rampage was out of timeouts when Hopper completed a pass to Davis near the 6-yard line, but Davis couldn’t get of bounds and time expired.
Hopper was 16-for-34 passing for 156 yards and rushed for 71 yards.
Davis had 212 all-purpose yards.
Steve Blanton, Shawn McBride and William Himes recorded sacks. Himes also recovered a fumble forced by Nichael Hill.
Garette Knight made nine tackles for the Rampage.
It’s possible the Rampage will schedule a game with a team outside the league for Oct. 18 to stay sharp for the playoffs.

Robert Wilson and Drue Davis shot 75s to lead after the first round in the Championship Flight of the McCanless Club Championship.
Cory Sides, Jay Streater. Mike Gilb, Carlton Jackson and Scott Curry were in a cluster at 78.
Matt Murphy’s 79 led the First Flight. He was followed by Charlie Gillispie (81), Chris James (83), Brandt Corl (83), John Rowland (84) and Ron Blythe (85).
Gary Bostian paced the Second Flight with an 88. Robert Torrence shot 90.
The second round is next Sunday.
