SALISBURY — Catawba College’s 15 Hands Equine Club participated in a workshop on Oct. 15 offered by Stacey Carter.

Ciaira Metz brought her horse, Rose, and mule, Bonnie, for the workshop. Trilby Kirk brought her horse, TJ.

Carter demonstrated her “heart-centered horsemanship” techniques and taught the club members how to relate to the animals to keep them calm, happy and interested in working with people.

Other members in attendance included Catawba students Tyler Scott, Mitchell Harris, Tiffany Vang, Alex Schaeberle, Hope Woods, Rochelle Waldroop and club faculty adviser Amy Holmes.

In September, members of 15 Hands Equine Club volunteered at Cash Lovell Stables and Riding Academy to repaint fencing. In exchange for their work, owner Parker Lovell gave the students a riding lesson on Oct. 17. Club members learned the basics, such as how to ask a horse to walk and stop, how to steer, and how to use the body to guide the horse and turn circles.
