The Rowan County Chapter of the Autism Society of North Carolina will have an education and group-sharing session about helpful books on autism at its November meeting.

The meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 14 in the Christian Forum Room at First United Methodist Church, 217 S. Church St. Visitors should enter through the door to the right of the courtyard.

Representatives of the Autism Society of North Carolina Bookstore will attend. Participants are encouraged to bring favorite autism-related books, as well to discuss at the meeting.

Child care will be provided but must be reserved by Nov. 10 at RowanChapter@autismsociety-nc.org.

“We wanted to showcase the Autism Society of North Carolina Bookstore due to the fact that they have helped numerous families with their wide variety of resources on various topics related to autism,” said Alice Lawson, Rowan County chapter president. “I know for me, I have used one book in particular, ‘All Cats Have Asperger Syndrome,’ by Kathy Hoopmann, to use in my son’s classroom to teach kids about people with autism in a fun and lighthearted way.”

The Rowan County Chapter meets the third Tuesday of every month at First United Methodist Church. In November, the chapter is meeting a week earlier due to Thanksgiving.

The chapter was formed by local parents and care providers who have experience with autism. It is supported by the Autism Society of North Carolina, which has as its mission “to provide support and promote opportunities than enhance the lives of individuals within the autism spectrum and their families.”
