Celebrate bridge

With the advent of video games and technology came the slow decline of interpersonal games and gatherings. So as sad as it is, bridge, which requires sitting down with at least three other people, has become a game for those of us age 50 or older. Youth are missing out on something wonderful.

Since bridge requires interpersonal activity and high memory function it is medically accepted as a hedge against dementia. I celebrate the warmest and brightest most active group in Salisbury.

As a group we welcomed back two former players forced by circumstance to be away: Marvin Query was missing for four years, and Don Webster for ten. We also celebrate new players Roy Barrow, Mack Brown and Ron Caudle. Ron Jeffers, a new director, has joined us and helps along with certified bridge teacher Dick Brisbin to run the games when I need them. Here’s to you all.

We all look forward to our annual Christmas party on Dec. 7 at the Italian Grill at 6 p.m. Please sign up by the end of November.

Our Evergreen game has grown from 3-4 tables to 7-8 tables.

The hands at the Oct. 27 game were mentally challenging and caused much consternation in the ranks.

Winning: N/S 1st Don Webster and Roy Barrow, 2nd Carol Bachl and Judy Gealy, 3rd Pat Macon and Judy Hurder with 1st in strat B Anna and Dave Goff;

E/W 1st Pat Featherston and Dick Brisbin, 2nd Beth Shafer and Toni Iossi (also 1st in B strat), 3rd John and Myrnie McLaughlin.

Best score N/S was 4CE-2 made by Mack Brown and Marvin Query while Nancy Brandt and Andra Cozart set their opponents 4DN* 3 tricks for best score E/W

The Tuesday, Oct. 31 Women’s Club game was a mixed up affair. All modern technology failed in the beginning so we needed to resort to old fashioned paper and pencil. Thanks to all for being good sports. On top of that the hands were crazy and challenging.

Winning were: 1st Fern Albracht and Judy Hurder, 2nd Mack Brown and Marvin Query, 3rd Margaret and Chuck Rimer, 4th Becky Creekmore and Dick Brisbin.
