Rockwell High school class of 1959

ROCKWELL — The Rockwell High school Class of 1959 held its 58th reunion on  Sept. 30 at the fellowship hall of Organ Lutheran Church. Fall arrangements prepared by classmate Christine Bame Graham decorated the tables and as the classmates arrived, they enjoyed appetizers prepared by classmate Ann Brown Miller. A delicious buffet dinner by Debbie Suggs Catering was enjoyed by the 49 persons attending, which included 28 classmates.

Sybil Penninger Baker welcomed classmates and guests and gave the invocation.

Carolyn Cauble Hartung offered a memorial presentation to Shirley Owens Griffin, the only classmate who died this past year.

Thinking of You cards were prepared for classmates who were unable to attend due to health issues.

After dinner, the group enjoyed playing bingo with prizes of gift cards and  handcrafted wooden items by classmate Joe Freeze. This was followed by a program of musical entertainment including songs and instrumentals provided by classmate John N. Trexler and his special guests, Ken and LaRae Parsons of Indian Trail.

The 59th class reunion will be held on Sept. 29, 2018.

The Rowan Redbuds

The Rowan Redbuds Garden Club will meet at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 16 in the Stanback Room at Rowan Public Library.  Linda Shirley will give a program on wreaths.  Guests are welcome.

 

Thanksgiving coat giveaway 

“Blessed to be a Blessing” is the theme of The Refuge Church of God In Christ’s Thanksgiving coat giveaway on Saturday, Nov. 18 from 10 a.m.-noon. The church will give away the coats they have collected to families who are in need in the community.

The event will be held at the church at 1133 Short St.

There will be free coats- all sizes, toddlers to adults XL, male and female.

Enrollment open for Rowan County history course

This 13-week course offered by Historic Salisbury Foundation and the Rowan Museum meets on Thursdays, mostly from 7-8:30 p.m., Feb. 1-May 3, 2018.

Classes meet at various historic locations, beginning with the Rowan Museum. The course includes information on Native Americans, early pioneers, the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, industrialization, and much more right up to modern times.

The basic text is “Rowan County… A Brief History” by James S. Brawley, available at the Rowan Public Library, or on CD at the class for $10.

Playful Past: North Carolina Museum of History Wants 1950s Toys

Your attic, basement or storage unit could hold nostalgic treasures perfect for display at the museum!

 The North Carolina Museum of History is calling for donations to its permanent collection and loans for an upcoming exhibit. To expand its toy collection, the museum is seeking toys especially from the 1950s to the 1990s — and particularly those with a North Carolina connection.

From dolls to vintage board games, American toys of yesteryear have special charm and were often saved in good condition and handed down from generation to generation.

The Curation Department is interested in the following toys:

1950s: Slinky, Mr. Potato Head (the model that used actual potatoes), Piston Action Robot, Silly Putty, Betsy Wetsy Doll, Tiny Tears Doll, Gumby, Play-Doh, Saralee Doll

1960s: Easy-Bake Oven, space-related toys, Rock’em Sock’em Robots, G.I. Joe (original), Operation (game), Mystery Date (game)

1970s: Pet Rock, Intellivision, Stretch Armstrong, Big Wheel

1970s and 1980s: Star Wars toys, electronic toys like Speak & Spell and Simon

1980s: My Little Pony (in good condition)

1990s: Tickle Me Elmo

Miscellaneous: Nintendo Game Boy (in good condition), Lite-Brite, Lincoln Logs, Hungry Hungry Hippos (game), Twister, Mouse Trap (game), army men (green plastic soldiers)
