North Rowan’s boys basketball team is scrimmaging at Cox Mill tonight, with the jayvees playing at 6 p.m. and the varsity at 7 p.m. The cost is $5.

Cox Mill won the 3A state championship last season and returns Wendell Moore Jr., arguably the state’s top player and one  of the best 16-year-olds in the country.

The 6-foot-5 junior small forward has been offered by Duke, UNC, N.C. State and just about everyone who has a basketball program.

Cox Mill has been reinforced this season by former Concord star Rechon “Leaky” Black, a 6-7 senior  guard/forward who has signed with UNC.

North Rowan will be under the direction of coach Martin Unger tonight.

Unger was head men’s coach at Belmont Abbey  College for two seasons, resigning in March, 2016.

A 1997 Western Carolina graduate, he has a ton of coaching experience. He was an assistant coach at a lot of D-I schools, including Richmond, Michigan and Florida State.

Unger came to North Rowan this school year as a guidance counselor.

Andrew Mitchell was 153-40 in six seasons at the helm of the Cavaliers, including a 1A state championship in 2011 and a state runner-up finish in 2A in 2014.

North was 14-12 last season in 2A and is back in the 1A ranks this season.

North wasn’t ready to make a statement about the coaching change on Tuesday, but that statement is expected soon.

North AD Ben Hampton is a busy man. He’s also the head football coach, and the Cavaliers have a road playoff game on Friday.

College volleyball

Makala Lytton (North Rowan) had 16 digs for Winston-Salem State in a 3-1 loss to UNC Pembroke on Wednesday.

College hoops

The 21st-ranked UNC Pembroke men’s basketball team will officially lift the lid on its 2017-18 campaign on Friday afternoon when the Braves  take on Lenoir-Rhyne as part of the four-team PBC/SAC Challenge at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.

Tipoff is slated for 3 p.m.

  Peach Belt Conference member Francis Marion will battle Catawba in the tournament opener on Friday at 1 p.m.

The two-day tournament will conclude on Saturday with a 5 p.m. contest between Francis Marion and Lenoir-Rhyne and a 7 p.m. tilt between the Braves and Catawba.

Mid. school hoops

Erwin’s girls rolled on Wednesday against Corriher-Lipe, 50-2.

Mary Spry scored 15 points. Haley Dalton scored 10. Hannah Isley had eight, and Madie Honeycutt scored six for the Eagles.

Erwin won the boys game, 49-16.

Erwin is at home against North Rowan today.

Prep volleyball

  Tyra Galloway  (Davie County) was one of two recruits announced by the Charlotte 49ers on Wednesday. Galloway, a 6-1 middle, put down 288 kills and recorded 201 blocks and 44 digs as a senior.

“Tyra is a high-flying attacker who has tremendous athletic ability and a fast arm,” Charlotte coach Karen Weatherington said.

Charlotte also signed Reagan’s Nya Steele. Steele is a setter. She had  816 assists, 209 digs, 51 aces and 33 blocks.

Reagan eliminated Davie in the third round of the 4A playoffs.
