Symphony Guild
The Salisbury-Rowan Symphony Guild “Hats Off to New Members” meeting was held on Oct. 2 at the home of Mary-Ellen Bailey.
President Debbie Elliott welcomed the members.
The Guild membership is at 150, with 15 new members. Membership remains open.

Ann Meredith announced the 2008 Christmas Tour of Homes will be Dec. 6 and 7 at The Crescent and will feature the homes of Faye and Banks Cline, Shari and Bill Graham,Charlotte and David Hall, Leigh andJohn Harlan, Lynn and Mike Mills, and Cathy and David Varner.
A contribution was made to the symphony Endowment Fund in memory of Sybil Efird, longtime Guild member.
A check for $4,000, the Guild’s first contribution to the symphony for this season, was presented to Linda Jones, executive director.
Granite Quarry reunionSixteen members and spouses of the Granite Quarry High School class of 1944 met Saturday, Oct. 4, at noon, at the home of Frances Trexler in Granite Quarry, where they enjoyed a sit-down dinner. The meal was prepared by Trexler and desserts made by Dot Caskey and Madge Russell.
Trexler welcomed the group to her home and President C. C. Caskey gave the invocation.
After dinner, Caskey conducted a business meeting. The group decided to continue the reunions on the first Saturday in October. Next year’s reunion will be Oct. 3 at noon and the place is to be decided by the committee. Secretary Trexler read the minutes and reported on members unable to attend. There were no deaths of members since last year. Warren Morgan gave a treasurer’s report.
Frances read a program she prepared for their 50th reunion called “A Trip Down Memory Lane.” It was fun living in the past again for a brief moment. The group played Chinese Bingo with the prizes they brought to share.
Planning the reunion were C. C. and Dot Caskey, Madge and Gib Russell, Warren and Evelyn Morgan, and Frances Trexler. Others attending were James and Troy Mills, Effie Vellines, Ruth Shuping, Anne Stiller, all of Salisbury, M.L. and Ruth Wagoner of Swannanoa, and Ray and Jane Ritchie of Kannapolis.
Yadkin Village reunionThe second annual Yadkin Mill Village reunion was held Saturday, Sept. 20, 2008, at Dan Nicholas Park. Hamburgers and hot dogs were served to approximately 110 guests.
Marlene Kepley welcomed everyone and Richard Simerson gave the blessing. A gift was given to the oldest female present, Beulah Hoffner, 92, and the oldest male present, Kenneth Barnes, 89.
Everyone shared memories of living in the former Yadkin Mill Village. The next reunion will be on Saturday, Sept. 26, 2009.
Richfield reunion
The Richfield High School classes of 1945, 1947, 1948 and 1949 held their annual reunion Oct. 4 at noon in the Ridenhour Community Building in Richfield.
There were 32 members attending.
Boyce Caudle, class of 1947 president, welcomed members. The Rev. Fred Hill conducted a memorial service for the 34 deceased members. Norman Barringer gave the invocation before the meal, catered by Bud’s Bodacious. A period of business and sharing memories followed.
It was agreed to have the 2009 reunion Oct. 3 at noon at the Ridenhour Community Building in Richfield. Sue Frick Vint and John Morgan Jr. will serve again as reunion chairpersons.
Singing the school and fight songs closed the reunion.

Yawn Patrol Zone Toastmasters met Sept. 2 and 16 at United Cabarrus Insurance.
Tracy Threatt was voted Best Speaker, Stephen Rohrbach was voted Best Table Topics and Tim Pryor was voted Best Evaluator on Sept. 2.
On Sept. 16, the club held its annual Humorous Speech and Evaluation Contests. Anne Carroll was the winner of the Humorous Speech Contest and Michael Craig was the winner of the Evaluation Contest. Ann and Michael represented Yawn Patrol Zone in the Area 34 contests at Galway Hooker in Cornelius on Oct.2.Boyden reunion
The Boyden High School Class of 1946 celebrated their 62nd year reunion at the Franklin Community Center Saturday, Oct. 11. Light canapes were served during a greeting time for attendees, followed by a buffet meal catered by Jacky Groom of Weddington, the daughter of one of the classmates, Mary Ann Lewis Brigman.
Welcoming the group and presiding over the program was John Cauble, class vice-president. The Rev. Banks Shepherd delivered the invocation, as well as the memorial prayer in honor of known deceased class members. Eulene Fisher Shepherd read those 34 names following the prayer.
A general discussion included the need for further reunions to be held as luncheons rather than dinners and it was agreed to schedule as such. A tentative date for the next reunion is September 2009, with yearly get-togethers thereafter.
Naomi Rink Bernhardt was the recipient of the door prize and each member of the class received a small black and gold (school colors) sheer pouch as a “little reminder of Salisbury,” a Cheerwine and an Apple Ugly.
