SALISBURY — Sacred Heart Catholic School and its Student Government Association hosted a Veterans Day morning assembly and breakfast on Nov. 10.

SGA officers offered morning prayers. The student body stood for the Pledge of Allegiance and sang the national anthem.

School officials said they were humbled by the nearly 50 veterans who attended. Each of them introduced themselves to students and faculty.

The guest speaker, Doug Smith, reminded students of a few facts.

“The flag of the United States of America waves around the world,” Smith said. “The symbol of American strength, ideals, righteousness and tolerance casts light into some of the darkest corners of the globe.

“As Americans, we have the privilege to see our flag in countless ways — good or bad — through the lens of a political, social, fiscal or religious views. As Americans, we have been blessed with the gift of an opinion and the ability to express that opinion.

“Perhaps sometimes as Americans we take for granted these rights. Perhaps we forget that our protectors, the brave women and men of our armed services, stand between us and the evil that seeks to deny us those freedoms. Perhaps we forget about those veterans that carry our flag to those places in this world where our enemies hide and plot against the foundations of our very existence.”

He also challenged students.

“First, however, l ask all you students of Sacred Heart Catholic School to in your own way, show and demonstrate your appreciation to all those that have served,” Smith said.

“And, second, I ask all of you to learn. We should never forget our history as to who we are as Americans. All of you young people have a duty and obligation to exercise all of your freedoms each and every day.

“Our enemies are smart and talented — and they are persuasive. Our enemies play upon our weaknesses as a people. Please do not become consumed by small inconsequential passions. Focus your energies and talents upon uplifting your fellow American from poverty. Pursue openly and loudly the eradication of racial prejudices and biases. And, strive to unite everyone in your communities through your words and your deeds.”
