National Sports Briefs: Modano beats Rangers

Associated PressNEW YORK ó Mike Modano’s third-period goal snapped a tie and lifted the slumping Dallas Stars to a 2-1 victory over the New York Rangers on Monday night in the return to Madison Square Garden of noted pest Sean Avery.
Avery heard boos from the crowd that mostly adored him during his 1 1/2 seasons with the Rangers, cheers when he was leveled twice in the third period, and mocking singsong chants of his name when he picked himself off the ice following a hit by Dan Girardi.
Modano made it all worth it for the Stars, who had allowed an NHL-high 23 goals in starting the season 1-3-1.
Penguins 2, Bruins 1, SO
BOSTON ó Evgeni Malkin scored in the second extra round of the shootout to lift the Penguins over Boston in the Bruins’ home-opener.
Phil Kessel scored on Boston’s first shootout attempt before Petr Sykora tied it on the Penguins’ second shot.
It was the Penguins’ fourth overtime game (3-1) in their seven contests this season.
Kessel also scored a power-play goal in regulation for the Bruins. Miroslav Satan had the Penguins’ score.Canadiens 3, Panthers 1
MONTREAL ó Francis Bouillon scored 10:53 into the third period in his season debut and the Canadiens extended their winning streak to five games with a victory over Florida.
Saku Koivu recorded his 600th career point when he scored for a third straight game in the first period. Tomas Plekanec scored into an empty net with 21.1 seconds remaining.
Jaroslav Halak stopped 35 shots in his second start of the season.
– RALEIGH ó The Carolina Hurricanes have returned their No. 1 draft pick to his junior hockey team.
The team said Monday that forward Zach Boychuk would return to the Lethbridge Hurricanes of the Western Hockey League.
Carolina took Boychuk with the 14th overall selection in the June draft, and he had hand surgery before the season. He made his NHL debut at Los Angeles on Friday and also played Sunday at Anaheim.

WASHINGTON ó Wizards All-Star forward Antawn Jamison practiced Monday without a protective sleeve on his banged-up right knee and expects to be at 100 percent for the start of the regular season next week.
“No pain at all. No stiffness or anything like that,” Jamison said after practice. “I feel pretty good.”
He bruised the knee and left in the first quarter of Washington’s first exhibition game, at Dallas on Oct. 7.
– SALT LAKE CITY ó The Utah Jazz will be opening the regular season without their top player.
Point guard Deron Williams is out for at least two weeks with a sprained ankle, two days after Williams was injured in a preseason game at Chicago.

ATLANTA ó Dwight Howard had 29 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Orlando Magic to a 109-103 preseason victory over the Atlanta Hawks on Monday night.
Knicks 114, Nets 106
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. ó Wilson Chandler scored 22 points in his first start of the preseason, leading the New York Knicks to a 114-106 victory over New Jersey.
SPEEDSKATING
KEARNS, Utah ó Apolo Anton Ohno finished third in the men’s 1,500-meter final at the short-track speedskating World Cup, sealed off on the final lap by the top two finishers.
