Area briefs: Carson soccer sweeps

Carson’s soccer team completed a sweep of county opponents by beating NPC foe West Rowan 5-1 on Tuesday. Valentin Nava scored four goals to raise his season total to 32 and assisted Carlos Soto on the other Carson goal.
C.J. Sippel Led Carson’s defense, and Brandon Jolly and Juan Caicedo controlled midfield. Anel Ramic had a shutout until late in game.
Carson (8-10-2, 6-10-1) plays against West Iredell tonight.
* Randy Almeida had three assists as Salisbury routed Providence Grove 8-0 in the CCC.
B.J. Wood scored twice for the Hornets. Victor Nyae, Paul Kollie, Connor Miller, Kenny Bonilla, Wes McNeely and Frankie Cardelle had a goal apiece.
Salisbury used five keepers. Michael “Danger” Doran, Scott van der Poel and Miller had two saves apiece. Miles Jordan and Hunter Fisher had one save each.
“We played a very pretty game,” Salisbury coach Tom Sexton said. “I was satisfied with our level of play.”
Salisbury plays host to North Rowan tonight in a match moved because of Monday’s homecoming football game.
– Rowan Rampage
The third-seeded Rowan Rampage (8-2) plays host to the sixth-seeded Thomasville Titans (6-4) in the first round of the CCFL playoffs Saturday.
Rowan beat Thomasville 28-21 during the regular season.
The Rampage earned a home playoff game at Knox for the first time.
The game kicks off at 2:30 p.m. Admission is $6 for adults, $3 for children 6-13 and free for under 6.
Knox cheerleaders will perform at halftime.
– Apps’ football schedule
Contests against East Carolina, McNeese State and North Carolina Central highlight Appalachian State’s 2009 football schedule, which was released on Tuesday.
The Mountaineers will have six home games.
– Catawba athletics
Wingate, the region’s top volleyball team, beat Catawba 25-20, 15-25, 25-16, 19-25, 15-10 on Tuesday.
Stormi Gale had 16 kills for the Bulldogs (21-1, 10-0). Liz Willis had 56 assists and a dozen digs.
Melissa Powers led the way with 20 kills, 14 digs and four blocks for Catawba (13-8, 7-4). Shay Meeks delivered a career-high 20 kills and three blocks. Megan Courson dished out 53 assists.
* Catawba’s ‘B’ men’s golf team was ninth out of 14 squads at the LMU Fall Invitational which concluded Tuesday. Catawba shot a 609 for two rounds, 15 shots off the pace.
John O’Planick led Catawba with a total of 144 and placed fifth.
– Herd makes noise
The Carolina Herd 9-under baseball team went 3-0 over the weekend to win the Top Gun Winter State Championship in Concord.
The Herd outscored opponents 42-12, beating the Diamond Dawgs 17-7 for the championship.
Pitchers Cameron Prugh, Trevor Scruggs, Griffin Myers and John Owen combined for 16 strikeouts and five walks.
Peyton Lambert led the Herd with seven hits. Trevor Scruggs batted .877.
Other Herd players include Bryson Sprinkle, Chandler Lippard, Cole Perry, Hayden Setzer and Will Brown.
The Herd is coached by Mark Lambert, John Myers and David Prugh.
– Pfeiffer athletics
Pfeiffer’s women’s soccer team lost to Queens 1-0 on Tuesday.
– Corbin Hills golf
Corbin Hills Ladies Golf Association played Tuesday.
Becky Isenhour won low gross, with Beth Calhoun second and Phyllis Durland third.
Tony Iosso won low net, with Karla Swanson and Miriam Gruber tied for second.
Bev Cobb won low putts.
