ALBANY, Ga. — Jerrin Morrison and Malik Constantine had double-doubles on Friday as Catawba’s men’s basketball team beat Albany State, 77-69, for its first win of the season.

Morrison had 23 points and 10 rebounds for the Indians (1-2). Constantine had 21 points and 12 boards.

Post man Jeremy McLaughlin had one of the best games of his career with 12 points and seven boards. Henderson Lentz, a freshman from North Rowan, made his first college 3-pointer.

Catawba led by as many as 16 and held off a late rush by Albany State (0-4). Catawba shot 47.4 percent and won despite missing 15 free throws.

Catawba plays Montevallo in Albany today at noon.

Blue Bears fall

CHARLOTTE — Queens remained unbeaten (4-0) Friday night with a lop-sided, 104-60 win over Livingstone, in men’s college basketball action at J.C. Smith’s Brayboy Gym.

The game was the opener of the JCSU Tip-Off Classic, with the host Golden Bulls playing Benedict in the second game.

Livingstone (0-1) will play Benedict today in the tournament’s first game at 2 p.m., followed by a matchup between JCSU and Queens.

Queens jumped ahead right away and coasted to a 48-26 halftime lead, shooting 58 percent from the field. The Royals blistered the nets for 71 percent in the second half as the gap grew to the final margin of 44 points.

For the game, Queens made 40 of 62 field goals and was led by Jalin Alexander’s 20 points.

Guard Roger Ray made 5 of 10 3-point attempts and ended up as the game’s high scorer with 22 points. Malik Smith followed with 10 for the Blue Bears.

Livingstone made just 17 of 64 shots for the game and was outrebounded, 48-35.

NOTE: Livingstone’s freshman twins, Navar and Lydell Elmore, both 6-9, made their debut. Navar Elmore started and had five points and six rebounds. Lydell Elmore came off the bench with two points and two boards. The twins are from Branchville (S.C.) High School.

College volleyball

The third-seeded Queens  Royals defeated second-seeded Wingate University 3-0 in the semifinals of the 2017 South Atlantic Conference volleyball tournament on Friday afternoon on the campus of Carson-Newman.

Makala Lytton (North Rowan) had six aces as Winston-Salem State won against Virginia Union in a quarterfinal match in the CIAA tournament on Friday.

College football

Catawba junior kicker Lee Brackman has a 3.76 GPA in biology and was named to the All-District team for academics.

Women’s hoops

MISENHEIMER —  The Pfeiffer women’s basketball team romped past Hollins, 72-33, at Merner Gym on Friday.

Grayson Harris had  10 points, 10 rebounds and   four blocked shots in the season opener for the Falcons.

Freshman Destiny Jackson (Carson) made a 3-pointer.

Prep girls basketball

East Rowan’s girls have an eight-person roster and with one injured that left seven healthy bodies available for Friday’s opener at Central Davidson.

Foul trouble hurt, with whistles forcing starter Carolina Houpe to the bench early. The short-handed Mustangs  obviously have to avoid fouls.

East still gave it a good run, leading at halftime and for most of the third quarter.

“Central was a lot bigger  than us and they had more girls, but we showed a lot of hustle,” East’s second-year coach Kevin Holland said.

Adalie Harrison scored 10 for the Mustangs. Brooke Mitchell, Zee Winford and Hollie Harrison scored eight apiece.

But only four Mustangs scored.

Desara Hunt scored 18 for Central Davidson. Mikayla Sink added 10.

East won the jayvee contest. Lydia Miller led the Mustangs.

WELCOME  —  North Davidson topped Ledford, 17-10, on Friday in the second round of the 2AA state playoffs.  

Buoyed by Chris Dunn’s school-record 57-yard field goal, the Black Knights won their 12th in a row.

North Davidson is playing in the East bracket and will host South Granville next.
