MOORESVILLE ó Lake Norman Regional Medical Center’s Volunteer Auxiliary received the Five-Star Award from the N.C. Hospital Volunteers at the organization’s recent 25th annual education conference in Greensboro.
“This is the highest level award that the state association offers,” said Marge Broughman, president of the LNRMC Volunteer Auxiliary. “We have won it for the past several years consecutively. I commend the officers and committees that worked so hard to make this possible.”
The award is presented to hospital auxiliaries who meet a long list of qualifications regarding service and activities.
The hospital also has announced its medical staff executive committee officers for 2008-10.
They are Dr. David Gish, chief of staff; Dr. Craig DuBois, vice chief of staff; and Dr. Michaela Renich, secretary/ treasurer.
They took office Oct. 1 and will serve until Sept. 30, 2010. The committee coordinates and administers the activities and general policies of the medical center’s medical staff.
Wound care director
ALBEMARLE ó Dr. Brian D. Allen, a general surgeon, will be returning to Stanly Regional Medical Center as medical director of its Wound Care Clinic.
In his new role, Allen will work exclusively at the wound clinic, which will be adding Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) in a new location, Suite A, 303 Yadkin St., Stanly Medical Plaza. The clinic’s name will change to the Center for Wound Care & Hyperbaric Medicine when the relocation occurs in mid-November.
Allen was previously in a private general surgery practice and on staff at Stanly Regional for nearly 12 years. He was Stanly Regional’s chief of surgery from 1997-1998. He moved to Stanly County following his general surgery residency at Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Medical Center in Chicago. He earned his medical degree from the University of Illinois College of Medicine.
Serve Safe certified
Kim Shores and Rita Lefler are now certified in Serve Safe, a course recommended for food service operations by the Rowan County Health Department.
Shores is owner of McCombs and Company, and Lefler is owner of Carolina Sweets. The two are located at 113 N. Main St. in Faith and offer made-from-scratch salads, pimento cheese, jalapeno pimento cheese, cakes and baked goods.
REIA meets Nov. 6
Sophia Matthews will speak on “How to Create Your Own Lenders” at the Nov. 6 meeting of the REIA Concord-area Subgroup meeting.
The meeting at McCabe’s Steakhouse, 316 Brookdale St., Kannapolis, will begin at 6 p.m. with networking, dinner and announcements, followed by the educational program at 7 p.m.
Matthews will focus on how to create lenders and how she and her company have been doing that for years in the Charlotte area. Participants will earn Professional Housing Provider (PHP) credits.

Gentiva recognition
Gentiva Home Health of Salisbury is giving special recognition to its physical therapists during Physical Therapy Month.
Alan McArthur, Gary Mincher, Tonya Burchess and Jimmie Lee Askins have provided more than 20 years of service to patients in the community.
They will be honored with a special presentation in Gentiva’s Salisbury office Wednesday.
“Gentiva appreciates the compassionate care and uncompromising service these employees have given to patients,” said Debra Simmons, Gentiva account executive. “They have shown tremendous dedication through the years.”
Whisenant honored
WBTV reporter David Whisenant of Salisbury received the Silver Award for excellence in broadcast journalism from the Radio and Television News Directors Association of the Carolinas at its annual convention Oct. 18 in Charlotte.
Whisenant’s winning entry was a story titled “Fireball Roberts ó The Lost Tapes.” It featured radio play-by-play recordings of the 1964 crash at Charlotte Motor Speedway that eventually took the life of NASCAR legend Glenn “Fireball” Roberts.
Those tapes, obtained through Kent Bernhardt of the Performance Racing Network, had not been heard since 1964. The story also featured rare photographs and archival film of Roberts and his famous purple Ford.
Whisenant has covered Rowan and surrounding counties for WBTV since 1992. He and wife Jan have a son, Kyle, a junior at Appalachian State University.
