The Salisbury girls cross country team won the 2A Midwest Regional on Saturday, finishing with 69 points to top second-place Central Davidson, which had 98. West Stanly finished third and Lincolnton fourth.
Twin sisters Katherine and Emily Shields finished third and eighth, respectively, to pace the Hornets. A handful of multi-sport athletes rounded out Salisbury five.
Tennis player Brooke Johnson, who will not be able to run next Saturday in the state meet because of the state dual team tennis championship, finished 14th overall. Jenna Bryan, who also plays soccer, finished 26th overall. And Katelyn Horning, one of the best inline speed skaters in the nation, finished 33rd.
Other Salisbury participants were Margaret Kaufmann and Laurel Loeblein.
Salisbury finished second at the regional last season.
“The girls went out this year to prove they are the best in the Midwest,” Salisbury coach Trella McLean said. “It was thought to be a tough win because we only beat Central Davidson by one point at the conference. Through the rain and the mud, we won.”
n 3A cross country
Mooresville, Asheville, T.C. Roberson and Lake Norman were the top four boys teams at the 3A West Regional at Hendersonville’s Jackson Park and qualified for the state event.
East Rowan was seventh, South Rowan eighth, Carson 13th and West Rowan 17th.
The top five individuals who aren’t on one of the four qualifying teams also make the state meet. South’s Michael York, who ran 17:03.19 for seventh place, was an individual qualifier.
Northwest’s Chase Fisher (fifth) and Garrett West (eighth) qualified as individuals.
East’s Ross Oden was 11th in 17:10.71 and just missed the state cutoff.
Carson’s Ethan Horne was 15th. East’s Eli Walton (16th), South’s Tyler Kowalczyk (27th) and East’s Cole Honeycutt (30th) were next among county runners.
n In the 3A West Regional for girls, T.C. Roberson, Lake Norman, Asheville and Mooresville were the qualifying teams.
Northwest was fifth, South Rowan ninth, East Rowan 13th and Carson 15th.
Northwest’s Sierra Hagl (15th) and West Rowan’s Leslie Pence (17th in 20:47.66) were individual qualifiers for the state meet.
South’s Emily Kinney finished 22nd.
n At the 3A Midwest Regional at Charlotte’s McAlpine Park, A.L. Brown’s Larry Scaggs finished fourth and qualified for the state meet as an individual. Brown’s team finished eighth.
n SAC cross country
Lenoir-Rhyne’s women and the Mars Hill men won the SAC cross country meets held on Saturday.
Catawba’s women finished fourth. Catawba’s men didn’t post a team score.
Catawba’s Olivia Jacobs (South Rowan) finished fifth in 19:43 and was first-team All-SAC and runner-up for SAC Freshman of the Year.
Catawba’s Jacque Thompson (Salisbury) was second-team All-SAC. She finished 10th in 20:21.
Catawba’s Maleah Cole was 15th in 20:42.
n Catawba soccer
The Catawba women’s soccer team remained in the race for the SAC title Saturday with a 2-0 victory against Lincoln Memorial.
Freshman Lena Suarez opened the scoring for Catawba (12-4-1, 5-1-1) midway through the first half, and fellow freshman Erinn Wescoat scored in the first five minutes of the second half. Suarez now has a team-leading nine goals.
Catawba defeated Coker 7-0 on Thursday.
n Parks and Rec
The Salisbury Parks & Recreation Department will hold a basketball officials clinic for its Jr. Bobcat League on Nov. 2, 9 and 16. Clinics will be held at 4 p.m. at Hall Gym.

n Volleyball open gym
The Rowan Volleyball Club will have open gym for ages 10-14 today from 2:30-4:30 p.m. and ages 15-18 from 4-6 at Carson High School. The cost is $5.
The club (Salisbury/China Grove area) will have tryouts Nov. 1 from 9:30-11:30 a.m and Nov. 8 from 1:30-3:30 p.m. at Carson for ages 10-15. Tryouts for ages 16-18 will take place Nov. 2 from 2:30-4:30 p.m. and Nov. 8 from noon to 2 at Carson.
There will be a $10 tryout fee, and all players need to attend both days of tryouts.

n Youth baseball
The Carolina Sluggers tournament baseball team, based out of Kannapolis, won the 5th Annual Relay For Life tournament in Gastonia. The team has won four of its last five tournaments and went 18-2 in that span.
Team members are Tristan Wyatt, Alex Rodriguez, Jackson Raper, Cody Cline, Chris Howard, Austin Corriher, Bailey Meeks, Brandon Newton and Coleman Trammell.
