KANNAPOLIS — The Kannapolis Police Department has applied for reaccreditation.

The process includes an on-site assessment to verify the department continues to meet national professional standards.

The department has been recognized as an accredited law enforcement agency since 2000. One of the standards includes going through a reaccreditation every three years.

Administered by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, the accreditation program requires agencies to comply with state-of-the-art standards in four basic areas: policy and procedures, administration, operations, and support services.

As a part of the on-site assessment, agency employees and Kannapolis residents are invited to offer comments at a public information session at 6 p.m. Dec. 12 at the Laureate Center, Kannapolis City Hall and Police Headquarters, 401 Laureate Way.

Anyone who cannot attend this session can offer comments by telephone or in writing.

Telephone comments will be taken from 2 to 4 p.m. Dec. 12 at 704-920-4121. Comments will be taken by the assessment team.

Telephone comments as well as comments at the public information session are limited to 10 minutes and must address the agency’s ability to comply with the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies standards. The standards are available for review at the Kannapolis Police Department.
