Area Sports Briefs: West’s Turner named NPC’s top defender

West Rowan senior defensive tackle Devin Turner (6 feet, 285 pounds) was voted North Piedmont Conference Defensive Player of the Year by the league’s coaches.
South Iredell’s record-setting quarterback Brady Pope was honored as the league’s offensive player of the year.
Scott Miller, who led South Iredell to the conference championship, was honored as the league’s top coach.
Statesville kicker/punter Zach Nicholson was named as the league’s player of the year for special teams.
West finished third in the league and had seven players on the all-conference team. Turner was joined by defensive lineman Baiden Suddarth, QB Payne Stolsworth, receiver Jalen Houston, offensive lineman Dawson Sheesley, linebacker Daniel Durham and drop end Brandon Wallace.
Carson had four all-league players: QB Cole Sifford, receiver Jamarius Hairston, defensive back Jailen Williams and linebacker Devin Gay.
East Rowan’s three all-conference players are running back Sam Wall, linebacker Christian Bennett and defensive end Elton Hooper.
Statesville’s eight all-conference players included quarterback Bryant Young.
South Iredell had nine players on the team, while North Iredell had two.
Men’s basketball
Catawba College guard Jerrin Morrison has been named the South Atlantic Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week.
A senior from Charlotte, Morrison scored 38 points in Catawba’s 83-72 win at Winston-Salem State on Nov. 21. He scored 23 in the second half.
Women’s basketball
Livingstone College head women’s basketball coach Tiffany Silver was named CIAA Coach of the Week .
This marks the first time that Silver has earned honors from the league.
Silver, has led the LC women’s team to a 3-2 record and three straight wins.
Middle schools
Erwin’s varsity girls won against Mooresville, 52-15, on Monday.
Leah Hinceman led the Eagles with 15 points. Madie Honeycutt scored 10. Mary Spry had nine points, Haley Dalton scored eight, and Riley Isley had six.
Erwin plays at China Grove on Wednesday.
