KANSAS CITY, Mo. ó Larry Johnson, already facing possible suspension by the NFL, was charged Monday with simple assault for spitting his drink in a woman’s face. Several hours later, the Kansas City Chiefs indicated the two-time Pro Bowl running back would not play for the foreseeable future.
This most recent incident, which allegedly occurred at a Kansas City nightspot on Oct. 10, marks the fourth time in five years Johnson has been accused of assaulting a woman.
PANTHERS
Reserve defensive tackle Darwin Walker was driving to the team’s walkthrough Saturday morning when he was involved in a car accident near Bank of America Stadium.
A team spokesman initially described it as a fender-bender, but coach John Fox acknowledged Monday it was a “pretty serious accident” that caused Walker to miss the win over Arizona due to general soreness.
REDSKINS
Defensive end Jason Taylor and cornerback Shawn Springs are expected to miss the game next week against Pittsburgh.
Taylor had a minor procedure done on his injured left calf Monday.
Springs, meanwhile, will sit out a third consecutive game with a strained left calf.
“We’re going to hold him out,” Zorn said.
COWBOYS
Coach Wade Phillips said it is “really unknown” whether tight end Jason Witten and cornerback Anthony Henry will be able to play Sunday against the New York Giants.
Witten hurt his ribs in the second quarter of a victory over Tampa Bay. He tried returning in the third quarter, but didn’t last long. Henry bruised a thigh in the third quarter and didn’t return.
RAIDERS
ALAMEDA, Calif. ó The bad news from the Oakland Raiders’ blowout loss at Baltimore carried over into Monday with the news that starting fullback Justin Griffith would need season-ending surgery on his knee.
BILLS
Josh Reed is out indefinitely with injuries to his ankle and Achilles’ tendon, leaving the Bills minus one of their most reliable third-down receivers.
BEARS
Brandon Lloyd had his left knee wrapped in ice as he walked to his locker, a cold reminder that he’s not quite 100 percent. Even so, he’s feeling better. Much better.
RAMS
Defensive end Leonard Little had an MRI on his hamstring Monday morning. Coach Jim Haslett said Little aggravated the hamstring he injured in the season opener in a loss at Philadelphia and will be day to day this week.
49ERS
Shaun Hill was promoted to the San Francisco 49ers’ starting quarterback Monday night, replacing turnover-prone J.T. O’Sullivan in the first big personnel move of coach Mike Singletary’s tenure.
SUPER THREATS
An Arizona man accused of planning to kill people at this year’s Super Bowl in Glendale was sentenced to a year and a day in prison.
Kurt William Havelock was found guilty in June of six counts of mailing threatening communications.
Authorities said Havelock bought an AR-15 semiautomatic rifle and 200 rounds of ammunition from the Scottsdale Gun Club on Jan. 30.
