SALISBURY — An 8-year-old boy was badly burned after trying to re-create a YouTube video, according to the Salisbury Police Department.
Police spokeswoman Capt. Shelia Lingle said that on Wednesday, a group of young children on Second Street tried to re-create a YouTube experiment in which a bottle of perfume was set on fire.
If the procedure is properly done, Lingle said, it creates a flash fire. But the experiment went wrong when the 8-year-old child’s clothes were sprayed with perfume and the lighter ignited nearby, setting his clothes on fire.
Other children in the group called a nearby adult relative to help put out the fire.
The boy suffered severe second-degree burns to the left side of his body on the arm, neck and face.
He was taken to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem for treatment. Lingle said he will eventually be transferred to Brenner Children’s Hospital, which is part of the medical center.
Salisbury police and the Rowan County Department of Social Services are looking into the incident.
YouTube has multiple videos demonstrating how to create a fire ball and flame thrower with perfume and other products, the Associated Press reported.
