SALISBURY — More than a dozen cars were broken into along the Interstate 85 corridor Thursday.

The Salisbury Police Department says the break-ins came just a day after it released fliers detailing how to store items safely to nearby hotels and businesses.

According to reports, break-ins occurred at Donner Drive, Castlewood Drive, Marriott Circle, Lakewood Drive and Emerson Drive. In all locations, the vehicles had been locked but items were left on seats or floorboards.

Police spokeswoman Capt. Shelia Lingle said the vehicle locks had been popped with some kind of tool and windows either broken or pried from their frames.

Items stolen include wallets, laptops, tools, drills, amplifiers, speakers, a CD player, liquor, jewelry and, in one case, a xylophone. The thefts occurred about midnight or early Thursday morning.

Police encourage residents to put any items of value, packages or bags safely in the trunk or to take them inside and to leave car doors locked — even when at home.

Lingle said police have stepped up patrols in the areas that were hit in the rash of break-ins.
