Area Sports Briefs: Rowan basketball teams enjoy perfect night

CONCORD — West Rowan’s girls basketball team stayed undefeated with a 58-49 non-conference win at Central Cabarrus on Friday.
Abigail Wilson scored 22 points for the Falcons.
“She actually had a really slow start, but she scored 16 in the second half,” West coach Ashley Poole said.
Mary Sobataka scored 12 for West (3-0). Egypt Alexander scored nine, and Taylor Poole had seven.
Nevaeh Brown scored 12 to lead the Vikings (3-2).
“We were pretty sloppy for the better part of the game,” Poole said. “But we made our foul shots at the end — and it’s a win.”
Central coach Brandon Blalock was ejected in the third quarter.

Salisbury girls roll
LEXINGTON — Salisbury’s girls traded baskets with Lexington in the first quarter, but then buried the Yellow Jackets, 20-2, in the second quarter.
That big quarter allowed the unbeaten Hornets (3-0, 3-0 CCC) to take charge for a 63-46 Central Carolina Conference victory.
“We stepped up our defensive pressure in the second quarter and got turnovers and transition baskets,” Salisbury coach Lakai Brice said. “We were 6-for-6 on free throws in the quarter and Maria Capito hit three 3-pointers.”
Capito, Bryanna Troutman and Anayia Fulson scored 16 points each for the Hornets. Tacorra Robinson had eight points. Jinika Glenn led the defense and helped hold Lexington star Mikenzie Harvin to 11 points.
It was the first loss of the season for the Yellow Jackets.

Carson girls cruise
MISENHEIMER — McKenzie Gadson scored 21 points as Carson’s girls pounded Northwest Cabarrus, 66-27, at Pfeiffer’s Merner Gym on Friday.
“Gadson was really active, crashing the boards and getting transition points off our 1-2-2 press,” Carson coach Brooke Stouder said.
Carson was ahead 27-6 after the first quarter and cruised from there.
“That was good to see,” Stouder said. “We had not gotten off to a good start in our first three games.”
Olivia Gabriel scored 14 for the Cougars (3-1), while Maci Cooper and freshman Ellie Wilhelm scored eight apiece.
Nine Cougars scored.
Braedon Allen scored 15 for the NWC girls, who fell to 3-3.
Carson plays at Pfeiffer today against Cox Mill at 3 p.m.

East girls romp
GRANITE QUARRY — East Rowan’s girls got their first win of the season on Friday, beating Mount Pleasant at home, 44-27.
“The girls have been working really hard, and it was good to see that effort pay off with a win tonight,” East coach Kevin Holland said.
Adalie Harrison and Brooke Mitchell scored 11 points each. Hollie Harrison added nine points for the Mustangs (1-3). Caroline Houpe pulled down 16 rebounds.
“Mount Pleasant was playing a zone that gave us trouble for a while, but we made adjustments at halftime that opened things up for us,” Holland said. “Defensively, after those first few minutes, we played pretty well.”
Haley Harrison scored 10 to lead the Tigers (1-3).

CONCORD — Caleb Mauldin scored 35 points to lead West Rowan’s boys to a 69-62 win at Central Cabarrus in Friday’s non-conference game.
Mauldin poured in 22 in the second half, as the Falcons (1-2) got their first win of the season.
Mauldin’s career high of 43 points also came against Central Cabarrus.
Jay Joseph scored 13 points for West.
West got two 3-pointers from Payne Stolsworth in the second quarter and another one from Martavio Rankin and managed a 35-34 halftime lead.
West took charge by holding the Vikings to four points in the third quarter.
Jake Rowden scored 19 and Adam Roller had 11 for Central Cabarrus.
Coach Jim Baker’s Vikings fell to 2-3. Central will play at West next week.

Carson boys win
MISENHEIMER — The Carson boys made 42 trips to the foul line pay off with 35 made free throws and beat Northwest Cabarrus, 73-65, on Friday at Pfeiffer’s Merner Gym.
Jamarius Hairston scored 18 for the Cougars (3-0) and went 12-for-12 at the foul line.
Owen White had several dunks and three 3-pointers and scored 17. Jailen Williams scored 15, including a driving bucket after Northwest had pulled within 62-60 with three minutes left.
Cameron Prugh got nine of his 14 points at the foul line for the Cougars.
Keyshawn Phillips and Josh Abee scored 11 each for the Trojans.
Carson plays against North Hills tonight at Pfeifer at 7:30 p.m.

LEXINGTON — Post man Bill Fisher scored a career-high 25 points as Salisbury won at Lexington, 77-65, in 2A Central Carolina Conference action on Friday.
Trell Baker scored 14 points for the Hornets and had five steals and five assists. Cameron Gill had six points, five assists and four steals. Oshaun Robinson had 15 points and nine boards. Elijah Moss had seven points and 10 rebounds.
“Moss was really exceptional,” Salisbury coach Bryan Withers said.
Salisbury (3-0, 3-0 CCC) moved ahead by outscoring Lexington, 21-10, in the second quarter and added to the lead in the third quarter.
“I still don’t think we played all that well,” Withers said. “But we have talent and we’re making plays at the end to get some wins. We’ve got a tough-minded team, a team that’s going to get those loose balls and a team that’s going to fight through adversity.”
Derrick Dearmon, a sophomore guard, scored 31 for the Yellow Jackets (2-2, 2-1 CCC).

GRANITE QUARRY — East Rowan’s boys got 15 points each from Bryson Sprinkle and Brandon Jefferson and beat Mount Pleasant, 56-38, on Friday.
It was the first win of the season for the Mustangs.
Sprinkle was 9-for-10 at the foul line in the fourth quarter. Jefferson had 10 rebounds, while Christian Bennett pulled down 12.
“Bryson showed a lot of senior leadership, our guys played a great team game defensively and winning the battle on the boards was key for us,” East coach Kurt Misenheimer said.
Bryson Efird scored 12 for the Tigers (2-2).
East (1-3) plays Tuesday at A.L. Brown.

Parks and Rec
Salisbury Parks and Recreation Department will host Moonlight Basketball tonight from 8-10 at Hall Gym. Program runs the first and third Saturdays of each month through April.
