Area Sports Briefs: Hornets, Raiders earn All-CCC honors; Carson basketball teams roll

Salisbury’s Brian Hinson was named Central Carolina Conference Coach of the Year for football.
Hinson led the Hornets to third place and a 7-4 season in his first year. Salisbury was 3-8 in 2016.
Salisbury defensive lineman John Pruitt; offensive linemen Rondarius Peele and Brandon Lingard; receiver Trell Baker; linebackers Jabril Norman and Nick Austin, and DB Tyvion Wood are All-CCC.
South Rowan receiver Kory Sellers, DB Christian Reynolds and lineman Patrick Brooks were All-CCC.

Salisbury’s Maria Capito was named CCC Player of the Year for tennis for the second straight year.
Salisbury also placed Julia Honeycutt, Bethanie Stauffer, Lillie Rusher, Emma Nianouris and Meredith Burton on the All-CCC team.

South Rowan’s Madison Lowery is the CCC Runner of the Year for girls cross country.
South’s Madison Henry and Madison McGuire are All-CCC, along with Salisbury’s Leah Cressler and Ellen Simons.

South Rowan’s Janiya Downs, Kira Rymer and Jenna Strickland made the All-CCC volleyball team.

Salisbury’s Jack Fisher was named CCC Defensive Player of the Year in soccer.
Salisbury also placed Pedro Cruz, Josh Faulkner and Tony Figueroa on the All-CCC team.
Fisher, Cruz and Faulkner also were named to All-Region for 2A public schools by N.C. coaches.
South Rowan’s All-CCC players are Eber Tapia and German Delgado.
Catawba is swept
HARROGATE, Ten. — Catawba’s basketball teams were swept at fourth-ranked Lincoln Memorial in South Atlantic Conference action on Saturday afternoon.
Catawba’s women started well and led after the first quarter, but they were done in by cold shooting and fell, 60-43. The Indians (3-4, 1-1) shot 25 percent for the game and 17 percent in the second half.
Serena Brown had 12 points and five assists. Terri Rogers had eight points and 12 rebounds.
Lincoln Memorial (4-3, 1-1) had two big runs in the second half. The game was tied at 23-all late in the second quarter before LMU took charge.

Catawba’s men played without leading scorers Jameel Taylor and Jerrin Morrison and lost at Lincoln Memorial, 103-58.
“It wasn’t a fair fight, obviously,” Lincoln Memorial coach Josh Schertz said. “Catawba was really short-handed losing two all-league guys and that’s not an indicator of how good they are or what we will see in a few weeks when we go to Salisbury.”
Malik Constantine scored 16 on 6-for-8 shooting for the Indians (2-4, 0-2 SAC), while Peyton Pappas came off the bench to score 12 points.
Catawba shot just 30.6 percent.
Lincoln Memorial (7-0, 2-0 SAC) made 16 3-pointers and got 25 points from Trevon Shaw and 21 from Cornelius Taylor.
Lincoln Memorial, which lost by seven points at Butler in an exhibition to open the season, topped 100 points for the third time.

Prep track
In a recent indoor/outdoor winter track meet held at Hopewell High, Brandon Hernandez of A. L. Brown broke a 33-year-old school record.
Hernandez ran 9:29.9 in the 3200 meters. The previous record of 9:31.7 was set in the 1984 Championships by Reggie Littlejohn. Littlejohn, who finished third.
Littlejohn still holds the Wonders’ records for the 1600 and 800. He won the state title in the 1600 in 1984 in 4:13.78.
Wonders basketball
A.L. Brown’s boys (2-0) got 22 points from Ahmod Hester and won against Mooresville, 79-69, in two overtimes, on Friday.
The A.L.Brown girls (0-3) fell to the Devils, 40-31.
Carson boys win
MISENHEIMER — Carson’s boys cruised, 64-43, against North Hills Christian on Saturday at Pfeiffer’s Merner Gym.
Carson led 53-17 at halftime and didn’t employ any regulars in the second half.
North Hills was a late replacement team in the tournament.
“We had a team that we we were supposed to play drop out, and we appreciate Coach (Butch) Lewis and North Hills allowing us to still have a game,” Carson coach Brian Perry said. “A lot of teams have their schedules full and some others didn’t want to play on Saturday, so North Hills really helped us out.”
Lewis, like Perry, is a former East Rowan player.
Silas Wertz scored 17 for the Eagles (3-4). Gavin Shehan scored 15, and James Houghton added nine.
Eleven Cougars scored, with Cole Perry and Jarius Bates getting eight each. Jamarius Hairston and Cameron Prugh had seven apiece.
Carson is 4-0.
“So far, so good,” Perry said. “Our guys had a good experience at Pfeiffer, and hopefully this tournament is something we can build on and start doing here every year.”

Carson’s girls rolled to a 62-38 win on Saturday against Cox Mill in the Pfeiffer tournament.
Olivia Gabriel scored 20 points for the Cougars (4-1). She took three charges and went 8-for-9 at the foul line.
McKenzie Gadson scored 14 points. Maci Cooper and Ellie Wilhelm had seven each.
Carson led 41-19 at halftime.
“The first half was our best half so far this season,” Carson coach Brooke Stouder said. “We executed well. We rebounded better, moved the ball in our halfcourt offense and made better decisons in transition. We achieved a lot of our goals.”
Nya Tillery scored 15 to lead the Chargers (3-5).

Women’s hoops
UNC Pembroke’s Aliyah Farmer (North Rowan) had 13 points and 11 rebounds in Saturday’s 61-59 loss to Young Harris.
Women’s volleyball
The second-seeded Wingate Bulldogs (27-4) ended their season on Saturday, falling against top-seeded Flagler College in the Southeast Regional title game.
Men’s basketball
Former Concord star Connor Burchfield broke the CAA record for 3-pointers. He made 10 in William & Mary’s 114-104 win against Marshall on Nov. 29.
Burchfield made five 3-pointers and scored 27 on Saturday in a 108-85 win against Savannah State.
