Former Carson star Alex Allen scored a career-best 24 points for Lynchburg’s women’s basketball team in Saturday’s 87-63 win at  William Peace.

Allen shot 10-for-15 from the field. She had nine rebounds and six assists.

A junior, Allen is getting her first extended playing time.

Lynchburg (6-1) won its fifth game in a row.

Aliyah Farmer, former North Rowan star, is making a big impact after transferring to UNC Pembroke from Mars Hill.

The sophomore forward is leading the Braves in a lot of categories and is averaging 11.3 points per game while shooting 65 percent from the field.  Farmer averages 6.8 rebounds.

Brielle Blaire (North Rowan) is healthy for the first time in her college career and is starting for Texas Tech.

Blaire had 14 points and  five rebounds in Sunday’s 79-75 loss to Houston.

Shenique Pharr (East Rowan) scored 15 points in Salem’s most recent game, a loss to Randolph.

Amani Ajayi (East Rowan) scored 11 points in her most recent outing for Averett, a loss to Emory & Henry.

Destiny Jackson (Carson) scored five points for Pfeiffer (3-0) in Sunday’s romp against Meredith.

Pfeiffer rolled, 92-69. Sydni Bickford paced the Falcons with 17 points.

Men’s basketball

Tre Williams (Carson) scored 18 points to lead Claflin’s 65-53 win against Fort Valley State on Saturday.

Williams made three 3-pointers. He had seven rebounds and five assists.

Williams, a senior who played two seasons at Davidson County Community College, is averaging 12.8 points and 4.3 rebounds.

Claflin is 8-1 and plays at  Winston-Salem State tonight.

Williams’ younger brother, Jailen, is a guard for the Carson Cougars.

David Tripp (A.L. Brown), another DCCC alum, is having a fine junior season at Bluefield.

Tripp accumulated 13 points and 14 rebounds in just 16 minutes in a weekend romp against Apprenctice School.

Tripp averages 11.3 points and 7.4 rebounds.

Michael Connor Jr. (North Rowan) had a hot hand for Point Park. He made four 3-pointers and scored 18 in a loss to West Virginia Tech.

Prep football

Former Catawba football player Sam Greiner is the head coach for Harding and has led the Rams into Saturday’s 4A state championship game against Scotland County.

That game will be played at 4 p.m. at Wake Forest.

Prep basketball

West Rowan is home tonight against Lake Norman.

West’s girls (3-0) won in overtime at Lake Norman to open the season. Sophomore Abigail Wilson has scored 20-plus points in all three games.

West’s boys are 1-2. They got their first win on Friday at Central Cabarrus, with Caleb Mauldin scoring 35 points.

Pro basketball

Overseas, Keshun Sherrill (West Rowan) is doing very well in his first pro season in The Netherlands. Sherrill averages 18.3 points and 3.9 assists.

Keshun’s older brother, K.J., is competing in the pro ranks in Bonn, Germany, and averages 13 points and 9 boards per game.

NFL

Tonight’s Pittsburgh at Cincinnati game includes two local players — Pittsburgh defensive lineman Javon Hargrave (North Rowan) and Cincinnati pass-rusher Chris Smith (West Rowan).

College wrestling

UNC Pembroke wrestler Brandon Sloop (Carson) won two of his three matches on Sunday at 174 pounds.

Local golf

The McCanless Couples played a Captains Choice on Sunday.

The first-place team was David Huneycutt, Azalee Story and Ralph & Pam Craver.

The second-place team was  Calvin Smith and Gene & Mary Seaford.

Story won closest to the pin. Harry Owen had longest putt.

College football

Appalachian defensive lineman Myquon Stout (Carson) finished the regular season with 38 tackles,  three tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks.

Appalachian State will face Toledo on Dec. 23 in the 2017 Dollar General Bowl at Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile, Ala. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. ET. The game will be televised by ESPN.

The matchup of top teams from the Sun Belt Conference and Mid-American Conference was announced Sunday as the 2017-18 bowl schedule was unveiled.

A full bowl lineup is in today’s Scoreboard.

College soccer

Catawba’s Jovana Sanchez has been named to the United Soccer Coaches All-Southeast Region third team.

Sanchez was one of just two freshman to appear on the three teams.

College swimming

CHESTERFIELD, Va. —  The Catawba women finished second and the men fourth at the Randolph-Macon Yellow Jacket Invitational Swim Meet which concluded on Saturday.

Sophomore Claire Featherstone highlighted Catawba’s Saturday swims, posting three school records.
