MOUNT ULLA — West Rowan’s girls stayed undefeated with a 56-44 win at home against Lake Norman.

West won opening night at Lake Norman in an overtime struggle. The Falcons got off to a horrible start in that one.

“What we talked about tonight was not getting behind them again,” West coach Ashley Poole said. “We played our best game so far. We got off to a great start.”

West (4-0) led 19-5 after a quarter and the outcome was never in doubt.

“We played the kind of fast tempo we want to play, we ran the floor, we passed the ball really well, and we played better defense,” Poole said. “There was a lot to feel good about.”

Abigail Wilson, a 5-foot-10 sophomore,  scored 20 points for West. She’s had four straight games in the 20s.

Egypt Alexander and Mary Sobataka scored 11 points each.

Lake Norman (1-4)  got 13 points from Lauren Sullivan and 11 from Rose Scheimer.

West Rowan’s boys lost another close one to Lake Norman, falling, 71-67, to drop to 1-3.

West lost despite 26 points from Caleb Mauldin and 22 from Payne Stolsworth. Stolsworth made six 3-pointers. Josiah Dixon scored 10.

Mauldin, a 6-foot-8 senior,  is averaging  26.7 points per game.

Demarcus Johnson had 28 points to lead the Wildcats (4-1). Luke Robinson and Zane Haglan scored 14 apiece.

West trailed at halftime, 43-30, but got back in the game with a strong third quarter fueled by three of Stolsworth’s 3-balls.

LC women fall

Claflin beat Livingstone’s women, 75-62, in Orangeburg, S.C., in non-conference basketball on Monday.

Zena Lovette had another big game for the Blue Bears (4-3), scoring 27 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Kyala Searcy added 15 points. Imani Payne had nine assists.

Jhanice Stokes scored 22 for Claflin (5-4).

Livingstone entered the  final quarter down only four points, but shots didn’t fall down the stretch. Three Blue Bears fouled out.

Women’s basketball

Khaila Hall (West Rowan) scored 19 points in 22 minutes for Longwood in Monday’s 81-68 loss to Valparaiso.

Hall missed Longwood’s early games with a concussion. Hall scored 15 in the second half. She had three steals and two assists.

Kelli Fisher (East Rowan) scored five points as UNC Asheville rolled on Monday against Warren Wilson.

Men’s basketball

Tre Williams (Carson) made the game-winning shot in Claflin’s 76-73 win at Winston-Salem State on  Monday.

Williams had 16 points, five rebounds and four steals.

William & Mary’s Connor Burchfield (Concord) was named CAA Player of the Week.

Burchfield averaged 28.5 points and made 15 3-pointers in two games.

D.J. Copeland (A.L.Brown) and Luke Gibson (North Stanly) scored 11 points each as Newberry  mauled Warren Wilson, 139-89, on Sunday.

Middle schools

Erwin’s girls beat Southeast, 58-12.

Mary Spry led the Eagles with 12 points. Haley Dalton scored 10. Riley Isley scored eight. Hannah Isley and Olivia McCray scored six each. Clara Beaver and Madie Honeycutt scored five apiece.

Cameron Stout scored 26 points to lead Knox.

Noah Loeblein led West (3-5) with 13 points. Casey Gouge scored nine, Josh Noble had eight, and Camden Stamper and Spenser Harrison scored six each.

Erwin won against Southeast, 46-25. Cameron Padge had 13 points, five rebounds and four assists.Nick Dale had seven points and 10 rebounds. Demario Chalk scored seven for the Eagles, and Finch McMillan added five.
