Nadirah Dance Company performs 'Cirque de Shimmy'

If you’re looking for entertainment this weekend that’s out of the ordinary, check out Cirque de Shimmy (pronounced “shim-ay”).
Nadirah Dance Company will present a show that’s part belly dance and part theatrical event at 8 p.m. this Saturday at the Looking Glass Artist Collective’s black box theater. The performance is sponsored by Lee Street Theatre.
Nadirah has studied various forms of dance since childhood, with an emphasis on ballet and jazz. She discovered bellydance several years ago under the tutelage of Sidnoir. Her love of the art form inspired her to further professional training under Ansuya and Jillina, and she has taken workshops with Suhaila and Ava Fleming, world renowned bellydancers and teachers.
She has also studied other forms of dance and done theatre and film work which brings excitement and energy to her performances. Nadirah now resides and teaches in Salisbury.
Her troupe is an eclectic ensemble of varied interests, embracing old and new art forms. African, American Tribal, Egyptian, Turkish and Middle Eastern influences combine to form a unique blend of World Fusion Bellydance.
Saturday’s show will also include special guests Mistaree, the Belly Jewels of Lake Norman and The Midnight Magnolias of Charlotte. Ringmaster for this circus-themed event will be Akkbar.Music for the show ranges from classical to carnival in addition to authentic music for belly dancing. Admission is $10 at the door.
