Thanks for the car and the donations
We would like to express our gratitude to the Rowan County United Way and to Ben Mynatt Nissan for our new car, awarded on Nov. 6 as part of the 2008-09 United Way Campaign. Larry’s name was the first of 12 contributors drawn as finalists in the car giveaway, and the last name drawn at the giveaway, making him the grand prize winner! He then drew Ben Mynatt Nissan’s name from five participating car dealerships as the one to provide the car.
At a time when money is tight and choices about giving are difficult, we are proud to be associated with the Rowan County United Way. The giveaway was held during a program update, and we were surprised to realize just what all the United Way encompasses. There are so many United Way agencies affecting so many lives in our county, and all the money raised in this campaign stays right here in Rowan!
We picked up our new Sentra at Ben Mynatt on Nov. 12 from General Manager Todd Rakes, with help from salesman Craig Hamilton. Our experience there was top notch. We were treated as though every penny came from our own pockets. We’d also like to credit the other dealerships that participated in the giveaway. They are Cloninger Ford/Toyota/Scion, Gerry Wood Automotive, Salisbury Motor Co. and Team Chevrolet/Cadillac.
A special thanks to Chuck Elliott, United Way campaign chairman; Ronnie Smith, United Way board member and enthusiast; Spencer Gettys, who drew the names; and last, but not least, to Poppy’s good luck charm, our granddaughter, Braylee Childers.

You asked for it
After reading the (Nov. 14) Post this morning, I realized my fan club had doubled. Now it’s myself and one more.
So this one is for you, Joyce Gulledge, and thanks for asking.
One day last week, I went to the library (Davie County) to get some movies. I picked out five (that’s the limit) and placed them on the counter.
This lady walked over to wait on me. She picked up the five DVDs, looked me right in the eye and said, “Are you going to watch some movies?”
I said, “No, I thought I’d go home and bake an old hen. I just came in here to check out these movies to give you something to do.”
Well, I’ve been thinking if she ever gets tired of working in a library, maybe she can move to China Grove or Landis and run for the town board. They could always use some more deep thinkers.
