The athletic department at Erwin Middle School has established a scholarship in memory of beloved coach Starr Forney.   

The scholarship will be awarded to at least one female athlete in the senior class each year at East Rowan High.

Donations to the scholarship fund may be mailed or dropped off in the main office at Erwin Middle School.

Ed Dupree Scholarship

The family of Ed Dupree has established a scholarship in memory of “Coach.”

The scholarship will be awarded to at least one male or female athlete in the senior class each year at East Rowan High. Donations to the scholarship fund can be mailed or dropped off in the main office at Erwin Middle School.

Basketball camp

Coast to Coast Life Skills Consultant will be teaming up with Team F.L.Y. and ABC Youth Development to host  a coed basketball skills camp for players wanting to work on their game over Christmas break.

Ages are 7-17.

The camp at Hall Gym  is on Dec. 28-30 and will be held from  9 until noon each day. Cost is $25.

Prep football

Due to wintry weather in the Winston-Salem area and with dangerous road conditions expected early today, the NCHSAA moved back the 4AA and 4A championship games scheduled to be played at Wake Forest to 3 p.m and 7 p.m.

Salisbury Academy

Salisbury Academy’s varsity boys basketball team defeated St. Stephens Lutheran, 46-18.

Ethan Ott led the Jaguars with 12 points, Chris Portillo scored 10, and Jaiden Colbert had eight.

Salisbury Academy’s jayvee boys won against St. Stephens Lutheran, 47-18.

  Leading scorers for the Jaguars were Will Wear with 16 points and Hank Webb.

Salisbury Academy’s varsity girls team defeated St. Stephens , 40-10.  Leading scorer for the Jaguars was Destiny Richardson with 18 points, Camille Palmer scored nine, and Madelyn Lawrence had eight.

Middle school hoops

Knox’s girls won against China Grove, 41-39, the first loss for the Red Devils.

  Kyla Bryant scored 12 for Knox.

Jaleiah Gibson had nine points and Mary Morgan,  Antasia Wilson and Jamecia Huntley scored seven each.   

Arnasjelle Corpening led the Knox defense.

Postponements

Friday’s local games were postponed by wintry weather.

• East Rowan-Concord games was rescheduled for Monday, Dec. 11.

• Salisbury-Oak Grove games have been rescheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 20.

•Carson-A.L. Brown games were postponed util Jan. 6, a Saturday. A quadruple header will begin at 11 a.m.

• Rowan-West Davidson games were rescheduled for Monday, Dec. 18.

Women’s basketball

Catawba’s women host Tusculum (7-1, 2-0 SAC) today at 2 p.m. at Goodman Gym.  Tusculum has four players averaging double figures and is averaging 80 points per game.

Catawba (3-4, 1-1) has been led by Terri Rogers. She averages 19.5 points and 9.5 rebounds.

Livingstone’s women  (4-4) host Benedict (2-6) at 2 p.m. today in a non-conference game.

LC’s women are led by Zena Lovette, who averages 27.3 points and 9.8 rebounds.

Alex Allen (Carson)   was named Lynchburg’s player of the week. She had 14 points and seven rebounds  in a 64-59 loss to Eastern Mennonite.

Texas Tech’s Brielle Blaire (North Rowan) is averaging 11.1 points and 6.4 rebounds.

Shenique Pharr (East Rowan) scored 17 points in Salem’s last game before Christmas, and Shenell Pharr (East Rowan) had five points.

Karleigh Wike (East Rowan) had eight points and six rebounds in Richmond’s 76-56 loss to Navy.

Torbush retires

East Tennessee State coach Carl Torbush has announced his retirement.

Torbush spent his early years in East Spencer, but his family moved to Knoxville, Tenn., when he was 11.

As a player, he was an All-American in baseball and football at Carson-Newman.

  The 66-year-old Torbush had been ETSU’s coach since the school revived its football program in 2015.

Torbush led ETSU to an 11-22 record in three seasons, including a 4-7 mark this season.

Torbush owns an overall head coaching record of 31-48 in seven seasons.

He coached Louisiana Tech in 1987 and North Carolina from 1998-2000. He also was a defensive coordinator at six different Football Bowl Subdivision programs.

Indians honored

Catawba placed four players on the Conference Commissioner’s Association  All-Super Region Two football team.

First team honors went to linebacker Kyle Kitchens, while receiver Sam Mobley, tight end Jourdan Osinskie and cornerback  Cris Page are on the second team.

Kitchens totaled a SAC-leading 12.5 sacks this year and had 20 tackles for losses. He was SAC   Defensive Player of the Year.

Mobley, a senior, broke a single-season school record with 1,046 receiving yards. He led the team with 56 catches and eight touchdown grabs.

Osinskie, had 30 catches for 400 yards and three TDs.  Page, a sophomore, had  three interceptions.

  Kitchens also made the AFCA Division II  All-America team.

Kitchens is just the fourth player in Division II history  to be named to three straight AFCA All-America teams.

He was a first team pick in 2015 and 2017 and a second team honoree last year.

Cheerleading

Davie County won the Carolina Cup as the state’s top overall team.

South Rowan was crowned champion in the medium varsity non-tumbling D2 division.
