Catawba’s men’s basketball team hung on for a 68-65 win against Mount Olive on Sunday.
Mount Olive (0-2) had a chance to send it to overtime, but Kendrick Easley misfired on a 3-pointer in the waning seconds.
Rob Fields made a free throw to give the Indians that 68-65 lead with 10 seconds left.
Antonio Houston led the Indians (2-0) with 20 points. Dominick Reid contributed 12 points and five assists. Cliff Burns (Davie) shot 5-for-6 from the floor for 10 points and pulled down five rebounds.
Craig Hayes had 16 points and 14 rebounds to lead Mount Olive.
Lenoir-Rhyne (2-0) beat Felician 73-65 in the first game of doubleheader at Goodman Gym. Pfeiffer transfer D.J. Blackmon led the Bears with 20 points. Josh Rudder added 17.
* Livingstone lost to Mars Hill 79-62 in its season opener on Saturday.
Calvin Gunning had 16 points and 13 rebounds for the Blue Bears. P.J. Gore scored 28 points for the Lions.
* Pfeiffer fell to Columbia Union 97-92 on Friday in its season opener.
Chris Woods had 19 points and six rebounds for the Falcons. Alvin Slaton scored 14 points. Logan Call pulled down 11 rebounds.
* Doug Campbell (Salisbury) made six steals in Rio Grande’s 93-37 victory over Ohio-Mansfield.
* Howard Hurt, who played at Erwin Middle School and North Davidson, is a walk-on on the East Carolina basketball team.
* Coker’s Michael Gore (South Rowan) blocked a shot in Saturday’s loss to East Carolina.
– College women’s hoops
Catawba’s women’s basketball team broke open a close game in the second half and routed Converse 81-58 in Greeneville, Tenn., on Sunday.
Brittany Higgins poured in 22 points for Catawba (2-0). Pam Muldrow had a huge, all-round game with 20 points, seven rebounds, six assists and seven steals.
Kisha Long added 10 points.
Catawba forced 40 turnovers and scored 41 points off those miscues.
* Lenoir-Rhyne’s women rolled over Pfeiffer 91-65 on Saturday. Denise Moore scored 21 points for the Bears. Jamila Harris had 19 points for the Falcons.
* Brittini Young, who played a season at East Rowan, led Mars Hill with 12 points in an 86-42 victory against Virginia Intermont on Saturday.
* Shayla Fields (Salisbury) scored 17 points for N.C. State in a season-opening 77-42 victory against UW-Milwaukee on Saturday. Fields hit three 3-pointers and had five assists.
* Meredith’s Brittany Cornelius (East Rowan) had eight assists and 10 rebounds in a season-opening romp over Penn State-Abingdon Saturday.
* Tracey Croner (East) had 11 points and seven rebounds for Guilford in a 72-55 loss to Greensboro College to open the season.
* Sisters Brittany and Reneé Roberson (West Rowan) helped Lees-McRae beat Brevard 68-54 on Saturday. Renee´ had seven points and five rebounds. Brittany had eight points, seven rebounds and two blocks.
It was the Brevard coaching debut for former Pfeiffer star Shannon Reid.
– Catawba soccer
Top-seeded Columbus State got a pair of first-half goals and defeated Catawba 2-0 in a semifinal in the Southeast Regional.
Lindsay Webster made 11 saves for Catawba, which finished 16-5-2.
– Catawba volleyball
Catawba’s volleyball team received a bid to the Southeast Regional as the No. 4 seed. Top-seeded Wingate is the host team.
This is Catawba second trip to a regional. The Indians (20-10) take on No. 5 Francis Marion on Friday.
– College football
East Carolina’s Scotty Robinson (Salisbury) had seven tackles in a 21-3 loss to Southern Miss on Saturday.
* Tristan Dorty (West Rowan) had one tackle for Wake Forest in a 21-17 loss against N.C. State on Saturday.
* Raeshon McNeil (Davie) made two tackles for Notre Dame in a 27-21 victory against Navy on Saturday.
* Anthony “Whopper” Williams (NW Cabarrus) was in on five tackles for Appalachian State in a 24-16 victory over Elon on Saturday.
* Cal Bacon (A.L. Brown) rushed for 70 yards for Greensboro in a loss to North Carolina Wesleyan.
– Prep basketball
The Northwest Cabarrus boys opened with a 62-45 romp over Central Cabarrus.
Ira Hines had 14 points, and Taylor Honeycutt had 13. Jeff Felton corralled 10 rebounds.
– SHS girls swimming
Salisbury’s girls beat North Rowan 165-50 in a meet at Hurley YMCA.
Garrison Stevens won the 100 breast (1:14) and 200 IM (2:26).
Madi Ralston won the 200 free (2:04.99) and 100 free (57.11). Shelby Carrion (1:07.70) won the 100 butterfly and 500 free (5:58.84).
Charlotte Mills won the 50 free (31.99), and Carley Drye won the 100 backstroke (1:11.13).
Drye, Stevens, Carrion and Ralston won the 200 medley relay in 2:04.99. Katie Canipe, Carrion, Ralston and Stevens won the 200 free relay in 1:55.60. Mills, Molly Robinson, Drye and Canipe won the 400 free relay in 4:54.
* The Hornet boys topped North 91-59.
Andrew McClollister won the 500 free (5:15.19) and the 100 breast (1:07.39).
Braxton Whitaker won the individual medley (2:58.72) and 100 back (1:25.31).
Grant Martz won the 200 free (2:54.55).
Austin Flynn, Whitaker, McCollister and Martz won the 400 free relay in 4:52.80.
Flynn, Jonathan Herscher, Martz and Maxwell Messinger won the 200 free in 2:15.52.
Martz, McCollister, Whitaker and Flynn won the 200 medley relay in 2:18.63.
