The NFL notebook …The Giants have until Wednesday to make a decision on the future of receiver David Tyree.
Tyree, who made “The Catch” in the Super Bowl victory over the Patriots in February, was placed on the physically unable to perform list before the start of training camp because he was still recovering from offseason knee surgery.
Tyree was given clearance to practice with the team on Oct. 15, but has been limited by a hamstring injury.
“Well, we will see,” coach Tom Coughlin said Monday. “Obviously, you are talking about a guy that has played extremely well for our team. But it is again going to come down to the decision this week on where we are physically.”
TEXANSHouston quarterback Matt Schaub injured his knee and will be out at least two weeks, possibly up to a month.
Coach Gary Kubiak said officials were still trying to determine the severity of the injury, but that Schaub was on crutches Monday.
Schaub injured his medial collateral ligament when he was hit in the knee by Jared Allen in the second quarter of Houston’s loss to Minnesota on Sunday. He was limping after the hit, but finished the second quarter before being replaced by Sage Rosenfels after halftime.
“He took a heck of a shot and he tried to play through it,” Kubiak said. “He was very courageous through the first half, but it was obvious that he couldn’t protect himself.”
Kubiak said he wasn’t sure if he would need surgery and the current treatment plan is for him to rest and stay off his left knee. When he returns he will have to wear a brace.
Schaub has 1,762 yards passing with 10 touchdowns and eight interceptions in seven games this season. He sat out one game earlier this season after spending the night in the hospital with a virus.
TITANSThe Tennessee Titans now get to see how their undefeated record plays on the road.
Off to an 8-0 start for the first time in franchise history, the Titans hit the road for five of their final eight games, starting Sunday with a trip to Chicago. Then they are at Jacksonville, a two-game stretch that is their longest away from home this season. Tennessee pops back home to host the New York Jets on Nov. 23, followed by a visit to Detroit on Thanksgiving.
BEARSOne day after leaving the field on a cart, Chicago Bears quarterback Kyle Orton was undergoing more tests on his right ankle to determine the extent of his injury.
Orton was injured in the final minute of the first half in Sunday’s 27-23 victory over the Detroit Lions, forcing the Bears to turn to former starter Rex Grossman. And Chicago might be without Orton for the next few weeks.
“I’m not playing doctor; you shouldn’t either,” coach Lovie Smith said Monday. “You should let us come and tell you once we know for sure exactly what the injury is. We’re hopeful, I’ll just say that.”
RAVENSThe Ravens have won three in a row. They are tied for the AFC wild-card lead, have twice as many road wins as all of last season and already have equaled their win total of 2007.
If John Harbaugh is thinking about the playoffs, or even proud about what the Ravens have accomplished in his first year as an NFL head coach, he’s keeping it to himself.
“What have we done? We’re 5-3,” Harbaugh said Monday. “We’re not going to be any worse that 5-11. That’s all we’ve guaranteed ourselves right now.”
SEAHAWKSQuarterback Matt Hasselbeck may return to practice this week for the first time in more than a month, in a limited role.
Seattle coach Mike Holmgren said that doesn’t mean Hasselbeck will play on Sunday at Miami. Holmgren said the bulging disk in Hasselbeck’s back is getting better and his right knee is getting stronger. But the coach reiterated that backup Seneca Wallace is still the team’s quarterback.
