SALISBURY — The winter issue of Salisbury the Magazine, a publication of the Salisbury Post, has reached subscribers and is being distributed across Rowan County this week.
It also is available at the circulation desk of the newspaper office, 131 W. Innes St.
The new magazine edition has a photograph of apple butter on the “Homespun Harvest” cover, coinciding with a feature inside about the process Jimmy Shoaf’s family and friends follow every fall to produce their homemade spread.
Another feature visits the many talented women who belong to the long-established Salisbury-Rowan Quilters’ Guild.
Elsewhere in the magazine, Deirdre Parker Smith and photographer Wayne Hinshaw take readers on a trip through the Piedmont Candy Co. factory in Lexington, which makes Red Bird candies.
Shavonne Walker visits with Livingstone College Professor M.J. Sims-Maddox, who has become an author of books filled with political intrigue.
The winter issue also reveals the considerable photography skills of Dr. Jimmie Anderson, a Salisbury dentist. Local writer and historian Reginald Brown presents the history behind the J.C. Price House on West Monroe Street. Rebecca Rider reports on “The Daily Mile,” a new program by Healthy Rowan that gets elementary schoolkids moving.
This edition’s “Rowan Original” is Cam Beard Hall of Piedmont Players, and Salisbury Symphony Executive Director James Harvey writes the “Salisbury’s the Place” column. Smith’s regular “Bookish” column also appears with three strong reading recommendations.
As usual, the winter issue is filled with the photography of Jon C. Lakey and the strong creative direction of Andy Mooney. It also includes numerous “Scene” photographs from local events and a calendar of things coming up in January and February,
Salisbury the Magazine publishes nine times a year. The winter edition represents the 22nd issue since the magazine’s debut in September 2015. The March 2018 issue should reach subscribers about Feb. 16.
