Area briefs: Catawba nips Newberry 1-0

Paige Harrington’s goal in the 73rd minute lifted Catawba’s women’s soccer team to a 1-0 victory against Newberry in the first round of the SAC tournament.
Harrington scored off a ball that was deflected by a header. It was the only shot on goal for Catawba in the second half.
Newberry put two of its shots in the second half on goal, but both were saved by the Indians’ Lindsay Webster.
Catawba (14-4-1) plays Wingate in a semifinal in Rock Hill on Friday afternoon.
* Pfeiffer’s men defeated Queens 3-2 in overtime in the first round of the Conference Carolinas soccer tournament.
– College volleyball
Catawba swept UNC Pembroke 25-23, 25-23, 25-15 on Tuesday.
Senior Melissa Powers, playing her final home match, led the Indians (18-9) with 16 kills. Senior Melissa Griffith added 12 kills and 13 digs.
Seniors Kalin Collier (two kills, one dig) and Tiffany Andrassy (one dig) also played their last home game.
Freshman setter Megan Courson had 46 assists and 10 digs.
* Pfeiffer swept Belmont Abbey on Tuesday.
* Pfeiffer’s Lauren Spiotta is Conference Carolinas Volleyball Player of the Week.
– Crescent golf
Keith Dorsett and Eric Mulkey shot 64-65 in the recent Halloween Two-Man tournament at Crescent and won the event for the third time.
The unique tournament features four formats รณ nine holes each of Best Ball, Captain’s Choice, Texas Scramble and Alternate Shot.
Ronnie Eidson and Jerry Wright shot 62-71 for second place. Ryan Honeycutt and Adam Jordan shot 64-73 for third.
Dorsett and Mulkey rallied by shooting 3-under in the Alternate Shot portion.
– McCanless golf
The McCanless Couples recently held a season finale tournament with 30 golfers participating in a four-man Captain’s Choice format.
Canadians Jim and Betty Goldie played in the event.
Pete and Michelle Kuld, Monica Green and Beverly Cobb shot 54 to win via a scorecard playoff.
Robin Leslie (No. 3) and John Rowland (No. 10) won closest to pin honors.
Phyllis Myers and Pete Kuld made the long putts on No. 14 and No. 4, respectively.
Season winners based on a point system were Matt Murphy (85 points), Gene Seaford (83) and Liz Murphy (79).
A new season starts in March with outings on Sundays.
– Pinion wins PP&K
Northwest Cabarrus freshman Bradley Pinion, 14, won the 14-15 age division of the NFL Pepsi Punt, Pass & Kick competition held at a recent Carolina Panthers game.
Pinion was the Carolinas champion and qualified for the nationals. He’ll compete in late January during a divisional championship game.
Pinion, who kicks off, handles placements and punts for the Northwest varsity, is ranked No. 1 nationally in the Class of 2012 in the Combine Series, an elite series of kicking competitions.
– JV football time change
South Rowan’s home jayvee football game against North Iredell on Thursday night will begin at 6 p.m.
– Women’s basketball
North Carolina’s women’s basketball team defeated Carson-Newman 114-64 in an exhibition matchup on Tuesday.
Italee Lucas scored 16 points for the Tar Heels. Rashanda McCants recorded a double-double.
– Youth cross country
The Salisbury Parks and Recreation youth cross country team finished its season by competing in the Jack O’ Lantern Jaunt at Concord’s Frank Liske Park.
First-place finishers in their age group were Marianne Abdalah and Asa Hollingsworth. Cade Cranford had a second-place finish.
Other runners include Hunter Gibbons, Boothe Pfaff, Eliza Walser, Emily Messisco, Anna Messisco and Alana Yow. The team is coached by Leslie Messico.
– Overseas basketball
Phillip Williams (West Rowan) scored 20 points and had seven rebounds for his team in Lithuania on Saturday.
* Donte Minter (West) averaged 14.7 points on 51.4 percent shooting in his first three games in Portugal.
– Catawba tennis clinics
The Catawba junior tennis clinics will continue through November. The clinics are held on Fridays from 3:30-5 p.m. and Sunday afternoons from 2-3:30 p.m.The cost of a clinic is $10 and includes all age levels. Contact Jeff Childress at 704-637-4265 or jchildre@catawba.edu.
