SALISBURY — Despite the time and the circumstances, Davie County’s girls put on a three-point shooting display Saturday morning to thump North Stanly, 54-30.
The War Eagles connected on nine treys in the game to secure a seventh-place finish in the 46th annual Dale’s/Sam Moir Christmas Classic at Goodman Gym. Junior guard Morgan Lewis led the assault for the War Eagles, hitting 6-of-11 beyond the arc for a team-high 20 points, while Rylea Carter drilled three long shots for 13 points.
“We shot the ball terribly yesterday (Friday’s loss to North Rowan),” said Davie coach Kevin Revels. “I figured at some point, it was bound to turn around by the law of averages. Morgan is a real consistent shooter for us and bounced back well from the previous day.”
Davie (3-9) started the game red-hot, shooting 50 percent in the first period and building a quick 16-4 lead. North Stanly (3-9) managed to get within six points late in the first half, behind Abby Roseman and Syrai Jackson, but the second half saw Davie quickly pulled away for good. A 19-3 third period did the trick for the War Eagles.
Davie was hampered somewhat by the loss of leading scorer Trinity Hayes to an ankle injury in the first half and she may miss some extended time according to Revels. Lewis and Carter filled the scoring void while Klara Lewis came off the bench to provide ball-handling skills.
The Comets were led by senior guard Sydney Hinson with a double-double — 11 points and 10 rebounds. Camille Shelton added eight points while Abby Roseman scored four and pulled down eight rebounds. North out-rebounded Davie, 40-30, but was hampered by a 21 percent shooting night.
