KANNAPOLIS – The Kannapolis City Council will meet Monday, Jan. 8, at 6 p.m. to vote on two measures relative to revitalization efforts.
First on the agenda is the renovation of a future Rowan-Cabarrus Community College site at 489 N. Cannon Blvd.
Property on North Cannon Boulevard was purchased last year with intent to relocate the city’s current location of the college. This, in turn, would make way for the construction of a sports and entertainment venue at the city’s center.
The North Cannon building will house Rowan-Cabarrus’ cosmetology, emergency medical technician and certified nursing assistant programs.
Council members will vote Tuesday to accept a bid for the reconstruction, which includes a new roof and new electrical, data and alarm systems.
The lowest bid for the the construction came from C4 Buildings with $5,150,000 base bid.
Second on the agenda is the termination of a lease between the city and the Piedmont School of Music and Dance.
The city inherited the leases of downtown tenants in 2015 after purchasing downtown properties. Piedmont School of Music and Dance is located on property to be purchased and redeveloped as part of the city’s demonstration project.
It currently occupies some 7,000 square feet and has a lease in place through Aug. 31, 2029.
The city will need to terminate the lease and vacate the building before the property can be sold to Lansing-Melbourne Group for restoration.
On Monday, the council will vote on the buyout of the school’s lease.
The buyout is for $400,000, with an additional $100,000 payable in annual installments of $10,000 for 10 years.
It was calculated based upon the fair rental value of the leasehold interest for the full term of the lease.
Business agenda items will be followed by a closed session. Council members will consult with an attorney on the location or expansion of industries and businesses in the area.
Monday’s meeting will be held held in the City Hall Council Chambers, 401 Laureate Way.
