Catawba’s Melissa Powers has been named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association All-America third team.
Powers, a senior middle, is Catawba’s first Division II All-American in volleyball.
Powers led Catawba this season in kills, blocks and aces per set. The three-time All-SAC selection set school records for kills in a match, season and career. She was earlier named region and SAC Player of the Year.
n 8th-grade hoops
Erwin’s girls topped previously unbeaten West Rowan 43-41. The Eagles (3-2, 2-1) broke away from a 21-21 halftime tie and led by eight points during the third quarter.
West, 3-1 in the Rowan County Conference, battled back and had a chance to tie it up with two shots in the final seconds.
Sydney Poole led Erwin with 13 points and seven rebounds. Jessie Rummage scored 10 points and had five steals and six boards. Allyson Mills and Steffi Sides scored seven points apiece, and Casey Gullett grabbed eight rebounds.
West Rowan’s scoring was led by Shay Steele (15) and Tabitha Ball (10). Steele and Ball also paced the Bulldogs on the boards. Kym Caldwell had eight points.
n West’s boys defeated Erwin 41-24.
The Bulldogs (2-2) were led by Demetrius Davidson with 13 points and eight rebounds. Cody McNeely had 11 points and three steals. Brandon Ijames had seven rebounds. Darius Banner stole the ball three times.
Erwin (0-5, 0-3) was paced by Brandon Nelson with eight points.
n A pair of third-quarter 3-pointers by Dylan Goodman broke open a close game, and Corriher-Lipe’s boys rolled over Southeast 37-21.
Goodman finished with 10 points. Brandon Mason had eight points and blocked several shots for the Yellow Jackets. Dillon Parker added seven points. Nathan Lambert had six and Karl Benz five.
Parker, Benz and Lambert led the Yellow Jackets to a big edge on the boards.
K.J. Pressley scored seven points for Southeast, which was held to two field goals in the first half. Justin Evans had five points for the Patriots (2-1).n Allison Blackwell had 14 points and 11 rebounds as Southeast’s girls pulled away from Corriher-Lipe in the third quarter and won 42-16.
Tyesha Phillips added 12 points for the Patriots. Aleia Dewitt contributed eight points and eight steals.
n Sacred Heart hoops
Sacred Heart’s girls beat Concordia 46-16.
Kelly Dulkoski had 17 points and five assists. Katelyn Storey had 14 points and seven rebounds. Alison Sobatka had eight points and six boards for the Dolphins (9-1).
n Prep hoops
The West Rowan-South Rowan basketball games that were scheduled for tonight have been postponed until Dec. 22 because of West’s involvement in the football state playoffs.
n Robinson beat A.L. Brown’s girls 62-52 on Wednesday despite Zebresha Blakeney’s 16 points.
n A.J. Finney and Julius Brooks scored 12 points each as Page handed Mount Tabor its first boys basketball loss. The Pirates won 65-58 on Thursday.
Lauren Penley scored 15 points as Mount Tabor’s girls beat Page 58-48.
n R.J. Reynolds routed Carver 73-47 behind Alex Greven’s 18 points, but the Carver girls beat the Demons 46-42 on Thursday.
n The Sam Moir Christmas Classic will begin this year on Dec. 27.
n DCDS hoops
Davidson Country Day’s boys defeated Statesville Christian 65-43.
Kenrick Jobe scored 24 points and 19 rebounds to pace the Diamondbacks.
Conor Honeycutt had 15 points and five assists. Celexus Long had 10 points and five steals.
DCDS plays in a tournament at Myrtle Beach this weekend.
n Salisbury wrestling
Salisbury’s wrestling team lost to Statesville 45-36 on Wednesday.
Salisbury’s Dontarius Mills, Victor Faries, Joseph Figueroa, Marqi Ross, Ike Whitaker and Albert Shaver won matches with pins.
n Salisbury will hold its first annual wrestling tournament on Saturday, Dec. 6, at 9 a.m.
Concord, Durham School of the Arts, High Point Central, Providence, Reidsville, North Rowan, West Charlotte, West Iredell, West Stanly and Western Alamance will join the Hornets. Admission is $5.
n Hole-in-one
Arnold Herring made a hole-in-one on No. 10 at McCanless on Wednesday.
Herring used a 6-iron on the 130-yard hole that was playing longer on a windy day. It was his second career ace.
Herring was playing with Don Gheen, Bill McKinney and Rodger Wheeler.
n Hurley indoor soccer
Hurley YMCA is accepting registrations for indoor soccer through Dec. 28.
The league is for boys and girls Pre-K through eighth grade.
A mandatory skills evaluation night will be held Dec. 30 at 6 p.m. Games will be played Jan. 16-Feb. 7.

Concord’s zMAX Dragway will open its doors on Thursday, Dec. 11, for the VAULT Assault Street Racing Challenge.
n NCHSAA meets
In a recent NCHSAA meeting, the board of directors sanctioned girls and boys lacrosse as a championship sport starting with the 2009-10 academic year.
Fifty high schools in the state now have lacrosse teams.
n The board recommended to push back the start of basketball in 2009-10, with the first practices on Nov. 9 and the the first games on Nov. 16.
The goal is to reduce the overlap with football seasons.
n Edwards honored
Appalachian State quarterback Armanti Edwards was named Southern Conference’s Offensive Player of the Month for November.
Edwards racked up 1,060 yards of total offense and accounted for 10 touchdowns.
